Nicholas Baer!

You can't really say enough about this guy. Does any player get more out of his minutes than him, productivity-wise. The guy is just a busy body always in the play, it seems. Sure, he didn't have the most points last night, but how many extra possessions did he get Iowa that transformed into points?

I believe he had 5 assists, 5 rebounds, 4 steals, who knows how many blocks. He's so fun to watch play. He's that inconspicuous lanky player that plays more athletic than he looks. What a find.

Funny Bohannon was being interviewed and referred to him as..... "he's just an animal".

Nickname: Baer = animal.

He's got the quickest hands ever to go along with really long arms. Fun as hell to watch.

Every last team in the B1G would be better with Nick Baer on their roster. I don't care how many 4* and 5* kids you have, a player like Baer would always be able to come in and give you quality minutes, and make the team better, period. Love his game.

His high basketball IQ puts him into position to make plays. He just plays a very efficient game.

He's either extremely quick reaction wise or the game is really slow for him because he always wins those quick bang bang plays under the hoop. It also seems like he gets all ball on his blocks every single time. Even on the ones he gets called for a foul on.

I did notice st Nick is starting to swing through the ball more on his blocks. He will need to lighten up on that. That kind of arm swing attracts attention and could get him some more fouls called, even on clean blocks. Beyond that, I have no criticism of his game. He is phenomenal.

I've only had 1 complaint on Baer this year and that was early 3 pointers in the shot clock when he wasn't the best option for that shot. He still does that, but I'm getting more comfortable with it ... love his game.

Well, a Baer is an animal, so Bohannon had it right. In terms of him being a "find", I recall he "found" Iowa more than Fran "found" him. But bully for Fran for letting him walk on and give it a shot.

Actually, it was Nicholas' sister who went to bat for him.

Before Fran McCaffery ever saw Nicholas Baer play basketball for the first time, he got a sales pitch. It came from Baer’s older sister, Elizabeth.

She told McCaffery that she had this not-so-little brother who was a really good player who wasn’t being recruited as much as he should and she thought the Hawkeyes really should take a look at him. McCaffery checked Nicholas out when he played for Bettendorf in the 2014 state tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines and he decided to let him join the Iowa team as a walk-on.

What I've noticed the last few games is he looking to score a little bit more. I know he wasn't making his shot last night, but they were good looks. He's also trying to beat his man off the dribble and get into the lane some more. I'm guessing the coaches told him to be more aggressive offensively and that's correct, good things happen when he's aggressive.

But his true value is the fact that he can score only 3 points and still be considered for the game ball because all the other things he did. Awesome

When I played pick up games in Iowa City, there would be a guy like him who treated the game like it was the NCAA championship game, playing lock down D, in your face defensively, blocking shots, out-hustling everyone for every loose ball. Hated that guy.

But love me some Baer cause he's on Iowa baby!

Did you play at the Fieldhouse?

I was telling Mrs Sioux last night that I would have hated playing against Baer.

Strange. How could he know about Nick's 3-point shooting from high school? He probably attempted less than 10 in his high school career. He also didn't handle the ball much.

Quote from the article:

He attempted just one 3-point field goal in his entire high school career — at the very end of the last game — but he is shooting 45.8 percent (11 for 24) from 3-point range this season. He was three for five against Drake and hit four threes in an earlier game against UMKC.

He is also getting a bit of a reputation as a talented "shotblocker" with the refs, it seems...which is a good thing.

They will give him the benefit of the doubt more than a run of the mill hacker...
