Listening right now to your 1/19 podcast with Deace. Who in the hell scared you SO MUCH that it's causing you to REPEATEDLY defend the Brian Ferentz to OC move? Every time Deace makes a comment about the move....and they've all been spot on....you ask him to explain. WTF??? There is ZERO explanation needed for me on ANYTHING he has said....ESPECIALLY on how few Power 5 teams would even give Brian the time of day. You lose ALL CREDIBILITY when you say that this has nothing to do with nepotism, and more with being qualified. This program is a total joke, and for you to defend this move is laughable.

While recruiting could be going better, obviously, and we could have won a couple more games this year, the program is hardly a joke. The program in 1977 was a joke, if you want to start playing that game. We were 12-0 just one season ago, right? And we were 8-4 and beat two ranked teams going into the Bowl game, including, I believe, the #3 team in the country. If you look it up in the dictionary I am pretty sure there will not be a picture of us under the entry for "Joke."

Out of curiosity, do you think Bill Belicek just hands out coaching jobs for no reason? If you say yes you're either a liar or an idiot. Their TE unit was probably the best in the NFL when Brian was running it and they were doing very innovative things at that time. Even if Brian wasn't the one that came up with it, which may or may not be the case, don't you think he learned something while he was there? That is legitimate coaching experience, independent of the fact that he was Kirk's son.

I didn't listen to the podcast, I am simply responding to your comments. If you think that Brian's hiring as offense of Cordinator is laughable then maybe you should explain it. He might be Kirk' son but based on his experience in the coaching world and his pedigree the move is certainly plausible.

If you cant admit that, then maybe you're the joke.

NDSU, Northwestern, getting rolled by Penn State and Florida, and getting crushed in the 5th straight bowl game made this program a joke this year. Will it be a joke next year, who knows. But if you can't see the stank through your rose colored glasses then your knowledge of the sport of football stops at "ra ra ra" for (insert hometown team). I understand your homer fan mentality and sometimes I wish I could have it because it'd mean less stress come football season. But if you can't tell good football from bad then there's really no discussion to be had with you. Every decision and mediocre outcome will be rosey in your eyes.

Like it or not, this team beat Michigan and partly Nebraska because of their QB mistakes (namely several overthrown balls to receivers who had our DBs burned to the end one). That is not debatable. Watch the games again. Nebraska you could argue that even with the 3 overthrown balls we still would have won, but I'd hardly call beating this Mike Riley turd sandwich an accomplishment. Their DL was FCS level bad and look at their wins, ffs.

Enjoy the wins, be proud of the Hawkeyes, and revel in the bliss of being a homer fan, but don't act like this is a top 25 team (which with the current budget and facilities it should be).

A number of us really like this move. He has coached in the super bowl. Under him the Patriot tight ends excelled. He's done a great job with the running game and offensive line at Iowa. Both have been critical in Iowa winning 20 games in 2 years, first time ever getting 2 1000 yard rushers, and having the best offensive line unit in the country in 2016. He will continue to improve this already strong program.

Iowa has underperformed in season's past and may not be where we'd like it to be on a consistent basis, and is not above criticism, but it's not a joke. A program that has never, not once, won a conference championship may be considered a joke, but not Iowa.

You also cant sit here and act like this is just a complete and total garbage program... A joke program is the likes of Rutgers or Kansas... Do we need to and can we improve? Absolutely and some changes have been made to try and generate that, but ya cant act like this program is just trash

Not to speak for Jon or anything but.... The whole point of the podcast and having Deace on to talk about stuff is to explain their opinions is it not? Agree or disagree all you want with whomever but for you to wonder why Jon would ask him to explain his opinions is silly. Deace asks Jon to do the same on things too. It's what they do. When the firing of White came up (I call it a firing anyway) Deace didn't understand why the RB coach who had 2 1000 yrd rushers this yr wouldn't be brought back and then Jon proceeded to explain the Eno deal.. It's what they do is talk things out.
I totally agreed with Deace that this is classic nepotism. That doesn't make Brian unqualified for it though. Both can be true. Just because another school wouldn't hire him doesn't mean he's a bad hire. It means they don't have a relationship with him.
The coaching world is just a big frat house. Why is it that there are rumors as to where coaches are always going to be bouncing around to? Because the media can tie these guys together be it HCs with assistants, HCs with ADs etc etc Based off of their past time together. The relationship between those involved is the #1 reason for how coaches get jobs then anything else I think. It's why blacks have been slow to get hired still more so then anything. It's not race but that's a whole other topic. Sure resumes and how their styles fit and those types of things matter. But relationships are what tie everything together.

The truth of where the program is lies between where the majority of the people on this thread are arguing. It's certainly not a "joke"....we are a year removed from an undefeated regular season and literally two inches away from a playoff berth. We then followed that up with a disappointing season based on returning playmakers, but 8 wins, including a win over a top 5 team don't come around every year either. It'll be interesting, for sure, to see where the next 5 years takes us.

And by the way, I don't think it's debatable that Jon has a mancrush on BF that surpasses his previous mancrush on Jake Christiensen....and never in my wildest dreams did I think that was possible....

Yeah he's pretty optimistic on him that's for sure. I think it's as good of a fit as Iowa could have gotten. What I'm nervous about is the immediate results next year. Sure Oline is all back with Wadley but new QB with still a less then scary receiving corp... Just has me wondering what if they struggle next year? The schedule is tougher and now there's clearly a bit of a split on how people are taking this hire. So what if Iowa wins 7 games or less? That might not be pretty depending how they look doing it of course... Well KF has all the security in the world pretty much I guess so 1 (more) sub par year might not be the end all be all but it may not be as fun of a year as we'd all like.

If we can get even average production out of our receivers, I think we can have a good year next year. Iowa, under Ferentz, has an excellent track record with 1st year starting QBs....and from everything I'm hearing about Stanley, he has the chance to be a really good QB. With Wadley coming back, that'll help free up Stanley in that teams won't just be able to tee off on him. So all we need is just avg production from the WRs and we have a chance to have a decent offense next year.....

I still get a chuckle how the offensive line got an award for the best line in the country when they could not pass protect their quarterback to save their lives. Might not be all on them though. Slow, banged up QB, poor WRs, and poor play call schemes by ele Davis/Captain Kirk.

I think the jury is still out on Ferentz Jr. We will see if daddy let's him make some innovative play calls.

You didn't read what the award was for did you?

Where's Jon?

I'm all for giving BF a try, but as stated above, he and they really need to improve recruiting. That is my first worry, especially if they cannot with how nice the facilities are right now in that arm race.

I am always amused when a poster attacks others with the "rose colored glasses", homer bias, etc. Then, the same poster proceeds to criticize everything s/he can think of that has gone wrong with Iowa football in the past. Now, you even go further. You are trying to negate the value of a couple of good victories by pointing out mistakes by other teams. You are indeed your own worst enemy when it comes to trolling Hawk fans.

with or without Brian as the TE coach, the Patriots would have still been great at the position no matter who coached them. Look who they had, Gronk and that other guy who is now in prison for man slaughter.

This thread holds little value in the scheme of things but I did see something that caught my eye. First year QB! At Iowa, it is the 1st or 2nd year starting that we get our best production out of this position. There is a lot of hope for next year, this and of course BF @ OC will gitrdun! Perpetual Debbie Downers aren't gonna get me, nope.

I like your optimism. I wish I had some more of it myself. I guess I would only say that similar things were being said going into this year only we had a senior proven QB instead with what should have been a more manageable schedule then what we'll have next year. So we'll see..

I can only imagine some of these threads if Iowa has another losing season.

I still believe that 90% of these threads are Cyclone fans. No fan in his right mind would complain about a season in which Iowa defeated then #2 Michigan and then #15 Nebraska, and prevailed in 3 out of 4 trophy games. If we had defeated Wisconsin, we would have been right back in the Big Ten title game (and that Wisconsin game came down to 3 or 4 plays).

The Brian Ferentz hire can only be judged as time passes. Anyone paying attention knew it was going to happen at some point. It should not have been a surprise to anyone.

There is no way Brian Ferentz can be worse than the lazy, fat and tired Greg Davis. No way. It is all upside now. At least Brian brings youth, energy, passion and enthusiasm. That is a big part of being successful in any job.
