I agree with that. But my argument was against someone saying stars don't matter. People think just because rating services are flawed, they are worthless. It's pretty short sighted.
I know what you are saying. I'm saying stars only matter with 4 or 5 star kids, because everyone knows who the top 300 kids are. After that, they are pretty terrible at identifying the other 200 or so 4* kids out there. So you are right, the top 10-20 recruiting classes are obviously the best classes (not because Rivals says so, but rather those schools are winning recruiting battles against other elite/good school). It is the area that the rest of the college football world lives (the Iowa's, Wisconsin's) in that 20-50 range that rankings don't make a difference. IE there just a very slim difference between #26 and #47.
