Troubling Attrition In 2013 Class

Our 2013 recruiting class was rated #55 in the country and nearly last in the Big 10. Even the staff would admit that it wasn't up to Iowa standards. Low star ratings are not always the end of the world, as we are a "developmental program."

What is VERY troubling about the 2013 class is that 60% of this low ranked class are no longer with the program, including the cream of crop. That is something that cannot be sustained at a program like Iowa, where depth is something we don't have the luxury of having:

Reggie Spearman - the jewel of the class. Chicago stud. Illinois State.
Derrick Willies - spring game legend, 6'4 WR with hops. Left because didn't think treated fairly. Texas Tech.
Solomon Warfield - best offers in the class, including MSU, ASU, Penn State. Gone before he saw the field.
John Kenny - highly touted LB. Left because didn't think treated fairly, and was stuck playing FB. Arizona LB.
Nic Shimonek - Davis loved this gun slinging QB out of Texas. Left during the Rudock debacle. Texas Tech.
Colin Goebel - highest star rating in class, offers from Miami, Mississippi, WVU. Best OL prospect. Cal Poly.
Anjeus Jones - 6'3 WR from Dallas with 4.4 speed. Picked us over Texas Tech.
Omar Truit - One of the top recruits out of D.C., with offers from Syracuse and Maryland. Got DUI and was gone.
Andre Harris - low ranked recruit. Never cracked the 2 deeps and just announced his transfer. Never developed.
Malik Rucker - Didn't play much and transferred after his second year. Western Michigan
Brant Gressel - Got a DUI. Don't know much about the guy.

[granted, the losses were offset by some AMAZING luck, getting walk on/grey shirt contributors like Boone Meyers, Jewell, and Vandenberg who were willing to pay their own way to come to Iowa].

Unfortunately, there are 2 themes with these kids: they are mostly the higher touted kids in the class, and they are the out of staters in the class. One can only imagine the depth we would have right now with these guys still on the roster. Something needs to be done to retain the out of state kids. Some program that entwines them with the Iowa culture/community/team atmosphere.

LOL man. 2013 is gonna go down as one of our most successful classes in a long time:

Iowa

• Original Scout.com rank: 51
• Record since 2013: 27–13
• BCS/CFP bowl appearances: 1
• Conference championships: 0
• National championships: 0

Major contributors: DT Nathan Bazata, RB LeShun Daniels, LB Josey Jewell, CB Desmond King, RB Akrum Wadley, OG Sean Welsh

This group made a huge contribution to the Hawkeyes' 12-win 2015 campaign, but the contributions weren't limited to the recruited scholarship players. Left tackle Boone Myers also came to Iowa City in '13 as a walk-on. Like most walk-ons who find success, Myers didn't just come in from off the street. Hawkeyes coaches saw Myers, a 250-pound tight end in a wing-T offense at Webster City (Iowa) High, and thought he might grow into a capable offensive lineman. After seeing Myers play basketball, Iowa coaches offered Myers a walk-on spot. Myers elected to take that spot over accepting a scholarship offer from Northern Iowa. The ability to find walk-ons who may someday contribute is an underrated aspect of the recruiting process. The Hawkeyes dug deep to find the gems in '13, regardless of whether they came on scholarship.

These first two posts are the classic half-empty/half-full perspectives.

Not really. My post isn't my opinion it is a national opinion looking at results of that class. They are saying that the 2013 class is PERFORMING at a top 10 class

Not ascribing this opinion to you (don't know your opinion), but it's still an opinion - some see the 2013 class as being full of attrition and others see it as being a good class. Stop thinking it's always about you ;). Again, it's some "expert" who has made another list. I blame David Letterman.

It's always about me, just ask my wife. :)

If you're like me, that's at least what we're led to believe. Until you look up and find yourself attending some modern, interpretive dance recital or some like function.

For the most part it's probably hard for an out of stater to want to stay in Iowa if they aren't playing. Iowa is an aquired taste.

If Iowa was coming off the season they had 2 yrs ago you'd have fans leaning your way... However Iowa's coming off a 12-2 season with a ton of key contributors back and expected to have another really good year meaning the attrition from that class is pretty much irrelevant in for the current time. At least to me it is. If Iowa put together two or three classes in a row with a low attrition rate and were playing poorly you'd be on to something. That's pretty far from the case. Most of the players there left due to being beat out... That means someone better is playing. I dunno about you but I'm pretty darn OK with that...

Maybe it is an indication that the 2014 and 2015 classes are that much better...

I know it is a tired argument, but what have these kids done at their next schools? I am not smarting off here, I honestly don't know.

Attrition happens, some classes are more snake bit than others. The last few classes have been filled with more Iowa boys, so chances are there will be less attrition.

Also, IowaLaw, please stop posting the same posts on every forum you post on. It does get old.

IowaLaw is a complete tool and he needs to stay on Rivals with all the other whiny DB's. I came to this site to get away from the likes of him, and for the most part the posts on this site are way more insightful and intelligent...

Hold on here, are we sure Randolfo is Iowalaw? God that Iowalaw was such a doucher. Well not only a doucher, but an idiot as well. I mean you got your smart douchers, but then you got your idiot douchers like Iowalaw. I guess this post would match up nicely for Iowalaw, as only he would complain about a recruiting class that contained a Thorpe award winner, and some of the biggest contributors to the 2015 season.

We went 12-0 during the regular season last year, and yet Iowalaw finds something to complain about. I'll just enjoy the success instead of finding something the b**** about.

If you look at the list of players that have left, who of them improved their situation?

Willies, maybe, as he's going to a pass-happy offense. And he had to go the JUCO route to do it. His exit was unfortunate but I'll chalk some of that up to his immaturity.

Shimonek walked on at Texas Tech as did Kenny at Arizona.

With all due respect, these guys left because they couldn't win a spot at Iowa and weren't willing to stay and work for it. Happens all over the country.

Exactly not every kid can get to start/play a lot. Some choose to stick it out and be bench warmers and good teammates others don't...
I'm still bummed Fleming didn't stick around for his senior year... I have a feeling he'd have played more then he did last year... Granted if King/Mabin stay healthy and out of trouble he wouldn't have started but he'd have gotten on the field and having depth at that position would have been really nice.

Agree. Fleming is a tremendous kid and a really good teammate.

Tough decision for him to stay and maybe play or go to a place where there's a better chance to get on the field. I think the emergence of Michael Ojemudia and Josh Jackson probably had him thinking about his odds at Iowa. The coaches tried him at safety this spring, too, and he must not have seen a path there, either. I wish him the best.
