Mabin

What do you guys think of him moving to safety? I think he obviously has the size and we have enough depth at the 2nd corner. I posted this in another thread but never heard much. Thoughts?

I think the secondary is in very good hands as is. King and Mabin are the best CB duo in the conference, Taylor very quietly had a great year in his first season as a starter, and I think Brandon Snyder is going to show himself to be something special at FS. He's one of the best HS athletes I've ever seen in Iowa, and whether it was sports or academics, seemingly everything he touched turned to gold. I'm very eager to see what he's got.

I heard in a podcast that Jim Reid said Aaron Mends is going to burst onto the scene next year. If Snyder is the kind of player TM thinks he is and if Mends is as good as Reid thinks, our back 7 will be really good. If Ott gets his redshirt watch out.

Mabin is above avg cover corner who is great against the run. If someone is another des king then move mabin to safety where he might make it in nfl

I like Maybin at corner. He got picked on a lot because of the corner on the other side of the field. He's clearly going to learn more from that than amything else.

I wonder if Josh Jackson is part of the reason why Mabin may move to safety. For being a true freshman he showed some great things. Hopefully he doesn't miss too much of spring practice.

That's what I was thinking. I think Josh Jackson and Fleming can bring enough and I thought Mabin's size and ball skills would be interesting at safety. I don't know much about Synder so maybe he is the real deal.

I like Mabin at CB, but I do think if he plays in the NFL it will probably be at a FS (Which may end up being King's position after he graduates as well)...and I REALLY like the fact that we've finally got enough depth in the back 4 to have discussions like this!

Also it sounds like we have some great DBs coming in with this class. Hooker is especially interesting.

I was relieved to see the young man learn and improve as the year went on. There were times early on where I thought the only place he should move on to is another football program. I am glad he made improvements and is an important part of our defense. If we get Ott back for one more year our defense should be among one of it not the best in country.

It seems the only time Iowa DBs cover opponents' receivers in in the Raider package when its a third and long situation and most likely a passing down. Is Josh Jackson or Mends a better cover DB than Mabin? Who knows? Most of the time Iowa's secondary plays passive zone defense...except third and long. Would a better cover DB really matter in Iowa's scheme of things? Let's talk about changing Iowa's pass defense scheme to defend pass receptions before thinking about getting the best cover guy.

By this logic, Iowa would be no worse off if Willie Lowe was manning King's spot in the lineup.

So no, it wouldn't matter at all.

A 6'1 converted wide receiver with long arms I am surprised no one went with the Richard Sherman comparison. I like him at corner a good tackler that is great in run support. He gets into funks where he struggles with pass coverage, last quarter of the season he was really, really good.

That generic/vanilla scheme(Norm and Phil ran or currently run) have made several Iowa DB(s) a lot of money.

As SAFETIES because Iowa's pass defense doesn't do all that much preventing of the pass reception. One or, maybe, two sneaked by as cornerbacks in the NFL during KF's regime? Bet they had to relearn the position to function in the NFL as cornerbacks. There isn't much dissent that most of Iowa's DBs had the athleticism (except lately) to function in the NFL.

Only way I see mabin at s is if Josh Jackson is so good Mabin needs to move. Coaches are high on Jackson so it's possible but not probable

With a good pass rush the hawks can play more press man to man coverage which they did in the first half of the year. Ott's injury changed that a lot.
