No seriously. WTF.

QB can't handle pressure, so let's give him all day to throw. What could possibly go wrong?
 










Yeah, you need to send a blitzer up the middle in the QBs face late in the game like that.

That QB was good when he had time but could get rattled.
 




when you consider Pitt's first 2 TD's cane off turnovers, the Iowa defense only gave up 1 TD drive all game. the defense played pretty good for 3.5 quarters, then fell apart on last drive. but if Iowa does not give up blocked punt for TD, then the last minute TD given by defense would just be one of those meaningless scores in the last minute.

you can't count the beathard int and subsequent score against the D but I think we all are tired on seeing 3rd and 17 being completed to a wide open guy because the D only rushed 3. Really missing a healthy Drew Ott.
 


I fully agree that two of Pitt's score really can't be held against the defense. But why, oh why did Boyd not have someone in his jock strap all night long. Stop Boyd, Pitt has no offense.

Those 3rd (or 4th) and 15-20s are Iowa's achilles heel. Have been for years it seems like.

But I thought the same thing the entire drive by Pitt: why isn't Iowa blitzing a making their QB uncomfortable?

Boyd is very very good. No one will completely stop him. But more QB pressure would have been nice.
 




You know sometimes it comes down to players executing. Good god. They had 2 or 3 good drives. Offense basically gave away 2 scores. Had them in 3rd and 4th and long a few times on last drive...any time you force 3rd and 4th downs you give your team a chance to win. Now go out and execute. Did you see the huddle before the 4th and 15 play? Did you see parker specifically challenge the player he knew needed to step up...who then got burned/undressed by a te to the post for 17 yards? Players have to execute!

That's far easier said than done. King won his share of battles against Boyd, but Boyd beat King several times, too (especially on that nice double move to set Pitt up inside the five). He's an NFL receiver, and very few college corners are going to lock him down. Iowa has one who can go toe-to-toe with him, but only one.

This. That was a good one-on-one battle most of the night. Unfortunately, Boyd won on some critical plays. He's a very, very good player and he has a QB who can get him the ball. Assuming those two stay healthy, Pitt will win most of the rest of their games.
 


I said it in another thread, but keeping 2 LB at the Line of scrimmage spying on he QB and Rb on 4th and 15 is just dumb. Either blitz them and force a quick decision, or drop them in coverage and make the QB or RB beat you on a long run/short pass and run. Those guys being in no man land defending nobody allowed others to be open 15 yards downfield.

Iowa's run defense sure ate their Wheaties last night. Iowa's pass defense sucks. Iowa HAS to put some sort of pressure on opponent's QB's. I don't care what Mangino says about Iowa's cornerbacks, they aren't NFL-type corners. Is it the scheme? Probably, somewhat. Eight guys on pass defense makes for a sure pass completion for the other guys.. even if the QB was a Wisky QB. Can KF hire a pass defense coordinator? Iowa sure needs one.

Then double team him. Bump him at the line of scrimmage. Run some confusing pass defense at the QB. Narduzzi their pass offense.

Iowa's pass defense isn't good enough to go one on one on anybody. Not to apply pressure on the QB. Come on Phil, it's not unmanly to do so!

I think the problem for Iowa in that Raider D is they are spying the 2 Lb most of the time. That worked great Vs ISU as Richardson sucks donkey ballz and can't throw so his running is much more of a threat. It was obvious from the beginning of the game that Pitt was gonna throw more to the WR and down the field, I don't the the QB scrambled but maybe once. We should have either rushed 5 more or actually dropped all 8 into coverage.

I acrually think Pitt scouted that well and Phil is going to be forced to vary his Raider package calls or more teams will expose this as well.
