Some posters wonder but yes Woody can dunk

Was it the Rutgers or Maryland games or both where he had several slams. Item #1) when Woody gets a rebound or the ball close to the rim he seems like he cannot gather himself to get a little flex in his legs and power up with his quads and lower legs. Item #2) Woody does not anticipate the pass sometimes and doesnt start his move to the rim until the ball gets to him (we all see plenty of players who are taking a step while they catch the pass then all they have to do is plant that foot that is already moving and elevate. Item #3) Woody does not hold on to the ball well when he brings it down to go up for a shot (really great big men can do their footwork while the ball is still up by their shoulders.

He can dunk but his footwork and who knows maybe the strength in his legs precludes him from dunking a lot.

In three years I dont know if I have hardly ever seen him use a drop step or an up and under move which are two mainstay, basic moves for anyone with their backs to the basket.

Other thoughts?

I would say if he is paying big money to go to a big man camp he either isnt learning or getting his monies worth. I hope he is awesome next year.

I think his T-Rex arms and lack of overall athleticism prevent him from dunking often.

"Woody, white men can't jump."

Not this again...

Well a recent thread got hijacked by posters complaining about Woody missing layups and short shots. And these posters were questioning his dunking ability.

He can dunk, we just saw it a few games ago.

I was just wondering what others thought were his problems not making a lot of close in shots and not taking it hard to the rim

Well, I didn't see that but it is best practice to not feed the trolls. Definitely do not set up a new troll feeding station like this thread.

He can dunk when he has at least a two step head start to the rim yes. I think every dunk we've ever seen him have has had at least that. What we have not seen is if when he's under the rim go strait up with two hands and throw it down. Like uihawk82 laid out I think it's a coordination thing. He's strong enough. He doesn't have that high to go for peets sake even if his arms are shorter then the average 7'1 guy.
Acie Earl was pretty uncoordinated looking when he just ran up and down the court. Woody just is not coordinated enough for whatever reason and he hasn't improved at it much if at all.

Great post. There's 6 footers that can throw down pretty easily with a run up and jump off of their power leg I'm not going to get all "omg Woodberrries got mad hopz dunking all over people". He's never dunked off of two feet and he's never dunked on anyone. It's pretty sad really.

Can he block shots? He only has 11 this year. Seems like a dude that's 7'1" should have more.

Yes, Woody can dunk. Did we not see him dunk and then shoosh the crowd last year?

I'll wager Woody can dunk from a stand still.. I just can't recall seeing him do it.

I do love the shoosh of the home crowd. Although not obvious at the time, looking back, it was a sign that last year's team was thin-skinned, and would succumb to the pressure. This year's team has a spine. Maturity can be a good thing.
