FILA Jr/University World Team Trials

Another thing I HATE about Freestyle. Lofthouse outscores Polz in both matches and still lost. Scores were 4-3 and 4-2 if you were add up all the points. I am NOT worried about E. Lofthouse at all! He will be pretty good for the Hawks next year.
Looks as if McDonough couldn't make the cut down to 121 as he is in the finals for against Moore. 2 more wrestlers I am NOT worried about for next year. Kerr also has advanced along with Raising and L. Lofthouse. Johnson lost a close one to Rey who got 3rd last year.
Matt Ballweg is done but lost to 2 pretty good kids.

McDonough just pinned Moore in the finals of the challenge tourney.
Rasing also beat Johnson witth relative ease and will go for 3rd.
Luke Lofthouse has a couple of very impressive wins already over Bennett and Umberhauer and will face Mack Lewnes in the finals. Pretty good day so far for the Hawks. Let's hope that it ends up better than yesterday.

Great day for McD. I think he's our 133 national champ next year. Everyone can go ahead and blast that like always. There isn't a 133 pounder I bet on against McD, and with his frame he could easily fill into a large 133. You can't same the same thing about Clark and Ramos, but both would bring alot to the lineup at 125.

I think we're finding out that St. John didn't wrestle this year because he wasn't ready. When he lost to Ballweg this year everyone made excuses. I admit it, I was a person who thought he should have been on the mat last year. I was wrong.

Brands himself said that St John was the best 157lber but he still didn't want to wrestle him. Not sure what you mean about "being ready". Was Kerr/Janseen ready but not as good? Maybe St John isn't going to set the wrestling world on fire, but he is only a freshman and he'll be pretty good.

It wouldn't have been worth it to pull off the red-shirt for Kerr/Janssen like season, and had he wrestled I don't think we would have gotten much more than that type of season. His hype surpassed his talent. Alot of people acted like we were keeping an All-American on the bench, we weren't, he was a solid freshman who wasn't ready to be an All-American.

Also, who has some insight on what happened after the McD-Moore match. On another board a poster said that Moore made quite a scene.

He probably would have been close to being an All American. It was a pretty light class and Kerr showed that he could win against some of the best when the stars were aligned right. I wonder if it's just a case where St John's style is more suited for folkstyle, and he has a way to go on the international scene.

I've thought all along that people were getting a little ahead of themselves on St. john. To me it seemed like after he won those matches during the iowa wrestle offs people really wanted him in the line up. I thought that was just crazy. For one, that team last year never once wrestled at full strength and crushed everybody all year long and i thought to burn up a year of his eligibility would be crazy considering how much we'll need him in the future. I also agree with CRwrestling in the fact that I don't think he would have done much better than jansen/kerr this year so i would much rather have had him take his red shirt year. That year is so important. I mean hell, McDoungh had 8 losses his red shirt year, but look how it prepared him. I think St. John is going to be very good, but like any young guy, he's going to have his set backs. Honestly, I think that Ethan Lofthouse will have as much or more success than him next year. I hope they both do great!

He would have done better than Kerr but how much is up for debate. He was a very good 26-4 this year with losses to ISU's starter, Ballweg, Keegan Davis and Steve Fittery. Those losses were all in December and he beat Ballweg when they matched up later in the year. Among his wins was a major decision over the Big 10 Champ at 157. If he were put in the lineup he would have blossomed, IMHO.

That said, the decision to RS him was something I supported and absolutely the right move as you mentioned. He would have made us stronger but he just wasn't needed.

On another subject, I will never understand why people get so "down" on wrestlers for their performance in offseason freestyle tournaments, especially when they lose to talented wrestlers. Hell, Spangler is a 174 pounder while DSJ is a 157 pounder right now. Odds are there is a pretty hefty strength difference between the two.

I agree with that too. Freestyle is such a different animal. it's hard to compare although it is a measuring stick I guess. Either or, I'm excited to see DSJ and the rest of the young hawks compete next year.

Sponner, I couldn't agree with more on this one. I was just suprised that DSJ was pinned by Spangler. I think if they both the same size DSJ would tear him up! It will be interesting to see what happens over at isu with where Long,Reader,Spangler and Ward end up next year. I believe that Long,Reader and Ward are all moving up while Spangler moves down.

I could see that with Long and especially Reader. Ward didn't seem like a really large 184 pounder and could be pretty good there if he didn't move. I hope Long is always at McD's weight so that he gets stonewalled his entire career. It will be interesting to see where they end up.
