Typical fan overreaction, team always was and will be a bubble team

I'm sorry if you let a win over an OSU team that mistakenly played zone D nearly the entire game and beat a Nebby team that was out manned on the inside due to injuries get your hopes up and start to envision the hawks in the 2nd round of the NCAA.

Now on the flip side... let's not act like we won't have a shot to make the tourney because we lost an 11 point lead to a Tom Izzo coach teamed that had a player simply catch fire.

This team will be a bubble team... I've said it all along. I have them just missing the tournament and the guard play will catch up to us.

The guard play is the biggest mystery. If we can get even okay output from our guards this team wins soooo many more games. We have B1G forwards and MEAC guards.

so just so I get this straight, it's ok that Iowa is a bubble team in year 5 with a senior laden team?

I mean, is it really an overreaction to demand better at this point?

I'd rather get sky high and get final four tickets after every win and lose my sh*t and bail on the entire program after every loss. Cause that's what this site does.... and it's a great way to stay in shape.

My expectations didn't get too out of control with this team after starting 2-0 in the conference, but the second half of last night's game was definitely a reality check. One that I probably needed.

But I agree, lots of basketball left, and a lot could happen, for better or worse. If Iowa makes the NCAA tournament and wins a game or two this year, I think most of us would call it a success.

Iowa historically has been a bubble team more at NCAA time than a sure shoe-in. It seems they are always on the bubble. I don't care if they are as long as they get in.

Iowa has been trying to demand better since Davis left. A revolving door of coaches isn't the answer. With the pieces he is bringing in next year and his son down the line, I think things look bright. Our lack of gaurd court certainly isn't because of lack of effort by Fran. He gambled on some players and it bit him, but this board was complaining about never going after high caliber players and we have been lately. We get to 20 wins again this season and I see no reason to get down on the coaches. We all want 'better' now, but if you can't see how much better off now we are then just 3 years ago, I don't know what to tell you.

I don't understand what the issue is, we got a pretty nice team this season. I really like the way the players are starting to play together and move into their new roles sans losing our first NBA guy in a over a decade. Are we elite? No, but I don't remember many Iowa teams being elite....and besides 1 or 2 Iowa teams, most were on the bubble the entire season before they made any kind of run.

Bubble team is one person's opinion...sure there are others. I'm one person that doesn't think this team will be on the bubble in March. I see them being firmly in on Selection Sunday. We still don't have a bad loss on our resume...which is very important.

2 wins that were good to get now (Ohio St is young, Nebraska is beat up) but Iowa never plays well against Izzo. Trice going on fire never helps.

And to add to this...Who in the B1G is elite? Wisconsin is elite IMO. I'm not labeling Maryland elite just yet. So unless someone actually thinks the B1G is a 1 or 2 bid league this year there is zero reason to be worrying at this point. Losing at home to Michigan State wasn't much fun but I sure enjoyed winning at Ohio State.

There's a lot of basketball left. If I was offered 2-1 after 3 games going into the conference season I would have taken it...would not have cared which 2 we beat or which 1 beat us. I think 2-1 is a good start.

My expectations started high then dropped pretty good after the UNI game. When conference play started I had us as a bubble team. After going 2-0 my expectations rose a little. Last night's game didn't change anything for me because my expectations were already based on us being a team that crapped games down our leg.

The good news is, all other teams but 1 are in the exact same boat as us. We just have to win our share of 50/50 games and we will be in for sure.

Our front court is top 5 in the B1G. Our backcourt might just be 14th out of 14, at least right now. That combination screams out to me bubble team at best.

To go one step further, how many teams are elite? Maybe a handful? The difference between the 10th best team and the 40th best team is almost non existent. We will definitely fall somewhere in that group. Where we fall depends on how many 50/50 games we win. By 50/50 games I mean games that are still anyone's game in the last couple minutes, not necessarily games that looked like 50/50 before they starts.

I agree. And I sure like having a team that shoots well from the line in those down to the wire 50-50 games.

Your opinion seems to be shared by every prominent Bracketologist. Granted, this was also true last year at every point until "the collapse."

Avoid a repeat of last season's final 8 games, and I think we can do enough to be firmly in.

I'll echo what others have said -- almost all of us would have gladly taken a 2-1 start in conference play. If the 1 loss is to a "down" MSU, which will probably end up being the best conference team we've played so far, and it's probably OK.

This whole season is gonna be 1 step forward then 2 steps back. That's just how it's going to be because we have no guards. Fran went all in on Tyler Ullis. Caliapari stole him away at the last minute. Had he not, this team would be light years ahead of where it is now.

If we want Fran to go after home runs, we gotta expect a few strike outs.

I still believe in Fran and this team.

CORRECT. Me too.

Optimistic = 18-13 regular (9-9 B14). That's bubble NCAA / #1 seed, NIT.
Realistic = 16-15 regular (7-9 B14). That's bubble NIT but with strong resume and a BTT win, will get in.

Keep in mind, the ceiling and floor are a couple more or less W's than these records and this next 8-game stretch is brutal. That's why last night was so important for the psyche and confidence. The 2nd half meltdown was epic but hope MSU doesn't beat them the next 8 games and break the Hawks to the point of missing any postseason.

Name 8 more losses on the schedule. Keep in mind we already played Ohio State once and don't play Sparty again. NW and Rutgers are awful, Illinois is missing their best player, Minnesota and Indiana are inconsistent, Michigan has one of their worst seasons going, Wisconsin games are always close, Penn State isn't exactly a dominant team. It is hard not to finish in the top 5 or 6 of this conference. The big ten is down as a whole.
