Have we crossed the rubicon with Kirks conservatism?

In the case of the end of the game at Purdue. Its 50/50 and neither option mattered. The hawks had this game sealed. So, I say, work on your redzone offense. - It needs it.

For some reason, this year we have chosen to take points off the scoreboard.

Last year we put points up with punt return touchdowns and pick six's.

This year our players are literally too shell-shocked to attempt either.

I think Kirk's conservatism has won us a lot of games and from 99-2013 we benefited from it. But starting this year I think we are seeing that is has become a liability. Keeping CJ outa the Iowa State game likely cost us that game. Iowa State is way worse than Purdue and we beat them by two touchdowns (shoulda been 3).

Kirk is Tom Davis. Can someone explain why our AD hasn't reminded him that being Lute Olson is the goal? It's almost as if he NEEDS to lose against a patsy to get himself focused on what his team should be accomplishing.

Tom Davis's offense and full-court schemes were actually uptempo and exciting...except when they generally played MSU or 87 UNLV.

Dang, a few more signed up for a "thank you may I have another". Well father always said maintain a firm but just hand.

Let's start off with a huge Chuck Norris round-house kick.

Any of you guys heard of a guy named Dantonio? Sports writers often refer to him as old school or conservative. Well his offense is 3rd in the country right now at 50.3 points per game. Kirk's offense is 101st in the nation at 22.6 points per game.

Now guess why there is such a disparity between the two? (hint: MSU's talent isn't 98 positions greater than Iowa's)

how has KF been conservative this year?

Yes he has. Get yourself a chance to watch Iowa practice sessions. Then go back and rewatch Iowa's 5 games against 4 weak FBS squads and 1 FCS team. Take some NoDoz before attempting this.

The example he gave was KF not playing CJ against ISU.

KF certainly wasn't conservative against PU. It cost us 6 points, also. But, if KF went for it on 4th down, twice, inside PU's 10 yard line because he was trying to give CJ and the offense additional live red zone reps, then I am okay with that. It also showed me that KF does have confidence in CJ and it tells me KF does probably view CJ as the answer. He's gonna make him work for it, but I just get the impression that CJ is going to be the starter from here on out.

Actually it's more complicated than that. Think: kids coached not to return punts. Kids coached to dive for the dirt rather than the end zone when they make an interception (poor Mabin got a tongue lashing). Think: Check down.

^ Correct, it is stupid not to try and make a chip shot 28 yard field goal after a 17 play drive against purdue to take the lead 13-10. I could not believe that.

When your defense is working it is not stupid, it is correct to go on 4th down from the opponent 35 yard line, especially depending on the game situation and score.

And like blubber says above, an extra point length field goal with two minutes left puts you up 3 scores. We threw a pass on both of these 4th downs that could have been tipped and turned into a pick 6 much more easily than purdue blocking the field goal and returning it for a TD.

Some very strange decision making there.

This was my thoughts during the game as well. Plus our kickers need the experience as well. I hope to god he continues this aggressiveness if an opportunity presents itself like it did at OSU in '09...

If anything KF is getting more aggressive. From playing for TD's instead of FG, to playing more aggresive blitzing Defense, to playing a backup QB as he might bring bigger plays to the table.

It seems that some fans are so locked into old criticisms, that they can't see when things are changing. Now is KF ever gonna be a river boat gambler? No of course not, but at the same time I think it is easy to see some more aggressive tendencies out of KF this year.

More aggressive?

Struggles with 1 score victory over an FCS team.

Struggles with 1 score victory over a 1-3 MAC team.

Struggles in a loss to the WORST TEAM IN THE B12.

Struggles in a 1 score victory over a weak ACC team.

Struggles in a 2 score victory over the worst team in the B1G. (that was still in the game in the final 2 minutes)

That's what MORE aggressive gets you? No, that's what Kirk's conservatism gets you.

This is Kirk with his hair on fire this year. Are you kidding me? We are near the top in the nation in 4th down conversions. He's about to switch QBs from a solid conservative guy (who got us to a bowl game) to a talented goldenboy who just threw a pick 6. Also, Purdue isn't better than ISU, let alone way better. Purdue is the worst team in the Big Ten.

You're right ISU is worse than Purdue. AND WE LOST TO THEM. That's what you get when you coach your kids to be afraid of making mistakes at the expense of gambling for a W.

I do too Arvada. I just can't wrap my head around how any of this would be happening if KF wasn't looking for CJ to come out and just finally take this job. I think KF knows CJ is the more explosive QB, and just wants him to grab the job and run with it.

Then he makes JR his starter. How does that jive with your theory?

Bad boob jobs last night, now rubicons tonight, you guys are coming up with some clever thread titles .

Actually I agree with some of the previous posters that we are taking more chances this year. Going for it on 4th downs, more blitzing on D, etc.. I would like to see fewer fair catches on punts.

I already conceded Parker is a hero. For all we know GD wants to be one as well. As far as "we're taking more chances" silliness. You know what taking a chance is? Lining up for a FG, then executing a fake for a touchdown. We had 2 chances to do that against Purdue . . . passed on both of them.

No, ISU is better than Purdue. Purdue is that bad. ISU's rated like #67 and Purdue #112 on Sagarin. ISU would be about a 9 pt favorite against Purdue on a neutral field. They might be equal on defense but ISU's offense is definitely better.

Well, you must be in that secret society who is trying to bring back to life that word which has fallen out of favor. Link

I didn't click on your link. Was it clever? You know you're dealing with a master. Here, I'll show you how it's done.

What does CJ and JC have in common? Nothing, that's why the initials are inverse.

You're welcome.

crossed? I think Iowa crossed that a LONG time ago. Someone should tell KF that it IS possible to have both a good defense and offense at the same time AND it usually results in more wins.

Except for 2002 I believe his offense has been offensive when compared to his defense. Amazing how many Hawstriches are blind to this, not to mention how it affects realistic goals like going 5-0.
