It's still amazing to me how far we've come....

The 2009 Iowa/ISU game saw Iowa start the following:

PG - 6'1" Cully Payne
SG - 6'5" Matt Gatens
SF - 6'5" Eric May
PF - 6'6" Aaron Fuller
C - 6'7" Jarryd Cole

and our bench was:

6'5" Devan Bawinkle
6'9" Brennan Cougill
6'9" Andrew Brommer
5'11" John Lickliter

My how times have changed!

It kind of amazes me that we still obsess over Alford (I mean, I get why) when Lickliter did this to us. I mean, Cully Payne. As a starter!

Probably has more to do with personality than actual results. Todd was a nice guy who was just in way over his head. Alford was a pompous a$$ who was way over his head.

Correct. Lickliter's best season at Iowa was 15-17, and Alford had just one losing record (his first year) at Iowa. But most Hawk fans just didn't like Alford's personality. At all.

Of course, if Alf had won more at Iowa, I'm going to guess that "arrogance" would have been considered "swagger". But when you're running a mediocre to average program, and are still arrogant, it will rub people the wrong way. Tom Davis had more success and was a nice guy, so people liked him.
