B1G Things: My Hoops Power Rankings for 12/5

The only quibble I have is Jon stating osu hasn't had any tough outs. Beating Marquette in a true road game is really difficult. They will likely be a tourney team and tourney teams just don't lose a lot of home games usually.

What two wins would those be? Beating Marquette on the road and....

I was about to say this exactly. Marquette and...Ohio? I'm not really convinced Marquette is better than Xavier at this point, either. Never seen a Buckeye troll on here, maybe skinner is the first ever.

Marquette is always consistently tough and athletic. I think the other win was the dismantling of Maryland which was impressive. Devils Advocate

JD, I like that you put our your BIG power polls. I just can't get into a debate on who is better at this point, as I can't think of anything more irrelavant than a BIG BB power poll in Dec.

They might not be, but it was a true road game over a neutral site game. Big difference.

The same Maryland team that lost to Oregon St and let Abilene Christian play within single digits late into the second half? Not impressed. I'll take a neutral site win over Xavier and home over ND over beating Maryland at home.

These points would all be opinions rather than facts...just to clarify my post.

Some of those statements were arguable. However stating that Ohio State is much more athletic than Iowa and that they have been dominant in the B1G as of late are pretty clear to the vast majority of reasonable people. Also pretty much every serious analyst would put their perimeter D towards the very top in the country, if you want to split hairs and say it's not the very best, fine. Do you seriously want to argue any of those 3 points?

If you want more facts there isn't a single AP voter who ranked Iowa ahead of Ohio State on their last ballot. For the vast majority it's not even close, in fact, 45 of the writers had OSU in their top 5, while only 30 writers even bothered to rank Iowa, and only 6 of those had the Hawkeyes higher than 19.

Saying Ohio State is better than Iowa is trolling?

No, but getting bent out of shape about a freaking power poll put out in December by the purveyor of this site and defending the freaking Buckeyes, of all team, on a Hawkeye message board is.

I shouldn't have said both were far better, though the Marquette win could easily be classified as such considering it was a blowout on the road against a top 25 team (at the time). At best Xavier is equal to Maryland, and they dominated them in a blowout at home vs a close come from behind win by Iowa against Xavier at a neutral site.

Composite rankings:

56. Marquette (OSU Win by 17)
57. Ohio (OSU Win by 10)
65. Maryland (OSU Win by 16)
72. Xavier (Iowa Win by 3)
92. Notre Dame (Iowa Win by 5)

I'm not arguing against you having an opinion. We all have opinions but most of us don't present our opinions as statements of fact. My problem was that you stated your opinions as facts. They are not facts simply your opinions. The 1st paragraph of this post is also opinion. You have softened your tone but it's still just your opinion.

You obviously put much more stock in what "analysts" have to say than I do. What is a serious analyst anyway? I could care less what any AP voter thinks. They come out with a preseason ranking and then just move teams up as long as they keep winning. It means nothing...especially this early in the season. The next thing you will do is reference the RPI which is also a ridiculous rating system.

Let it go. We have differing opinions. I think it's a toss up between Iowa and Ohio State. You think Ohio State is...I don't know what.

WOAH, THIS IS FILLED WITH OPINIONS, STOP STATING THEM AS FACTS!

I don't think Osu being really athletic or playing really good perimeter D is an opinion. That is a fact.

Wisconsin ends up, or is even close to 1st in the Big Ten at mid-point and beyond = Big Ten goes from being the best conference to the worst.

Pomeroy stats don't agree with you regarding the conference or Wisky. They already own impressive wins. And the conference is ranked very high.

I suspect OSU will be #1 before long. They don't play anyone other than Notre Dame til about mid January

I'll need to see some defensive improvement out of Iowa before I'd put them in the Top 3 of the conference. "Needing" 98 to beat Notre Dame didn't exactly have me running around the living room yelling "FINAL 4 HERE WE COME!"...but Iowa was decent defensively last season and should be again eventually this season once they adjust to the rule changes.

Also, I can't wait to see Iowa play Ohio State and Michigan State IF they're no longer allowed to grab, hold, hook, check (with both hands), push, chest bump, hack, shove, flop and run over people...we'll see how well the refs call it as the season moves along and they get bored with actually having to work instead of just getting some serious face time on television.

You could make an argument for Wisconsin being the #1 team in the country should they beat Marquette today. No undefeated team has had a tougher schedule. Not a ton of great wins but potentially 6 good wins in just 10 games.

St. Johns
Florida
St Louis
W. Virginia
Virginia
Marquette

There are any really "great" teams in college basketball this year. Look at Arizona who is likely to be #1. Do they look like a great team? MSU certainly doesn't. Wisconsin has warts. OSU has warts

It's a great thing I started this whole thing off saying this was about right now. Whew...the world might have exploded.
