Chris Doyle

I think you are probably right but you have to admit it is a question that needs to be asked as we fail to be able to play four quarters of football in recent seasons and seem to lose the physicality battles against the upper echelon teams. For a period of time in this program that was not the case and some this is a direct result of strength and conditioning.

I agree with you 100%. Recent years Iowa hasn't looked like Iowa. Standford this year looks like Iowa looked before rhabdo. I hate using that as a turning point but I honestly believe it has had an impact on strength and conditioning.

I honestly think rhabdo caused the training program to be dialed back by the administration. I also think that it has been dialed back less and less each season since then. The Hawks are playing more physical this year than the last 2 years and also seem to be better conditioned than we have seen them since. Given enough time, I think the training program will be back to what it once was in terms of success. They just had to lay low for a while.

Hey Sparky here is one we agree on. rhabdo did have a effect on the program. Its also true others have caught up. Many big time programs sent thir people in to see how Doyle ran his program. Doyal is still a powerful voice inside the program. Sorta a 4 headed brain trust. Doyle, KF. OC, DC

i'm guessing the people that are talking about our conditioning issues are referring to the DL, you know, the positions we have had the most attrition over the past couple years

I think the DL had conditioning issues Clayborn and Ballards last year. Most of the attrition I think can be put on coach K

There's no way for any if us to say the S&C program has been scaled back (particularly each year progressively). We do know the program that caused the Rahbdo was discontinued. That work it had only been used a few times before, however.

IMO, the lack we had seen on the field was mostly due to the attrition, playing younger guys, and not having as much depth (particularly on the DLine-which another poster pointed out).

I suspect we'll see a return to the norm over the next couple years.

just the opposite, and i've heard many players say his factor is the factor of success, or the glue that bound everything together. one thing - since he is not a 'coach' he is the one coach that can have access to the players 365 days a year - that is not to be understated.

This. Give Doyle some talent to work with and he will once again show people what an outstanding job he does. Pretty amazing what he has accomplished the past 3 years considering the lack of talent he has had to work with.

Question- would you be ok with a lot of the Iowa players roiding if it meant ten win seasons? For me, yes.

I think some people are looking way too far into it. Did most major college football programs have strength and conditioning programs when KF and Chris Doyle arrived at Iowa? Yes of course they did. However, very few had someone in charge who were as advanced as Chris Doyle was. That's why we heard so much about him at that time. The late 90's and early 2000's were decades where the strength and conditioning world really started to change the caliber of athlete playing football. Chris Doyle was and in many ways still is renowned in the S+C world. The only difference is his philosophies and techniques aren't groundbreaking anymore. They are commonplace. Other programs have caught up. It's as simple as that in my opinion.

I can understand someone arguing that the Rhabdo incident had an effect, but personally I find that hard to believe. It was one style of workout. I find it hard to believe that one workout makes the difference between a 10 win team and a 4 win team. There's more to it than that. There's zero proof from anyone that the incident made him scale things back. The only thing anyone can rationally assume is that they quit doing that one workout.

Maybe it has been stated in the past, but what is Imported Ankle's connection to the program? It always seems like he gives the company line in his posts. I like Ferentz and all he has done for the university, so I often agree with some of Imported's takes. But I am a little skeptical that he doesn't have some fairly heavy bias when it comes to evaluating the coaching staff.

Regarding Doyle, he seems like a good coach and a good person, and definitely a key component in updating Hayden's Iowa program. But I wouldn't think he'd be all that different from other strength coaches at other top programs these days. And is it unreasonable to ask if his program is outdated, given Iowa's recent record?

And other posters make a good point. Doyle is the staff member with access to the student athletes around the calendar. Why do guys like Coach K and Erb get thrown under the bus for player departures if Doyle has the most exposure to these kids?

I'm not saying I disagree with the general narrative that has been put out there in the past. At the same time, it seems like Doyle can do no wrong when it comes to the Iowa program, while assistants are skewered for various reasons and the head coach is constantly criticized for being behind the times.

I'd also like to point out that he had 366 days of access in 2008 and 2012. Is it any wonder we had such a fantastic year in 2009 and have already exceeded last year's win total by 50%? I think not.

Had not thought of that but you are absolutely correct. Brilliant!
