Learn the game...

Before thinking you know anything. I have read multiple people talking about the bubble screen and how well it looked with Powell. Let's start there it was a tunnel otherwise known as a jailbreak screen. A bubble goes toward the sideline and a tunnel goes in toward the linemen. Stick to what you know. Football is a very intricate game and the lack of knowledge by people is what has led to bad habits from poor youth coaching.

this is a symptom of a bigger problem. People that think they know football or any sport but really don't are coaching their kids youth teams and teaching kids bad habits like poor tackling. Sports are more intricate than most realize. Really try to learn the game if you want to talk or critique it.

end soap box.

Agreed. People who can't describe the basic mechanics somehow think they are better than the coordinators.

We just had this very same discussion a couple weeks back...

Can we get a clarification on terms?

A bubble screen is generally a play where the receiver works from inside to the outside, "bubbling" back behind the LOS from his original alignment, and then trying to get outside as quickly as possible.

A tunnel screen (aka Jailbreak screen) is a play where an outside receiver works inward towards the mess...several of the interior lineman are to be set free so as to rush up the field so we can throw the ball behind them. The WR settles inside the "tunnel" (usually there is one guy designated to kick out the #2 defender while every else pins inside) and gets upfield between the hashes.

A "smoke" or "now" screen is one where the receiver doesn't really even move...maybe just switches his feet. QB doesn't even find the laces and he slings it out there. I remember at least one of these to KMM and another to Cotton (?) that was dangerously close (if not for a last second block by the other WR to that side) to being picked.

Added videos...

*Edit - For some reason I put the videos in the quoted part of my response so they didn't come over. And now for a different reason they aren't loading in my browser so they aren't coming over now!

Saddest part is that I know of high schools that don't know the difference between these. It is another reference to trying to copy things that are in fad instead of understanding them 1st. Such as how many teams run spreads and pistols now but don't really understand how to utilize them properly.

cool!

Foval, you need to have a talk with Gary Dolphin, maybe call his weekly coach's call in show. If I had a quarter for every time he uses the term "bubble screen" I could retire.

As long as we are on the topic of football pet peeves - whenever someone says "the New York Giants", I always say "the Giants haven't played in New York since '57!" They always look at me like "huh?" and I'm like "the New York Giants moved to San Francisco after the '57 season. It's the New York Football Giants...but they play in New Jersey, so not even THAT is accurate!"

Then, I usually fire a "learn the game" parting salvo and walk off. FACIAL!

How does someone calling a tunnel screen a bubble screen lead to bad habits in youth coaching? If they call it a bubble screen and run a tunnel screen who really cares as long as they're running the play the way it was designed. Sounds like you have your panties in a bunch over something pretty damn irrelevant. Then again, maybe I shouldn't citizen you over your soap box opinion.

Well excuse all of us.

You know what's even worse? People that think they know physics but really don't are teaching kids to throw around atoms and neutrinos like they're gumballs or something. It's all real funny until 200,000 people die.
