Ballard walks away from the NFL

Wow. I don't know what to think. At first when reading, I think Wow A guy that finally gets it. Then I read how cops are involved with a domestic disturbance. ?????? WTF is going on. Sounds like a guy that got stressed out about the NFL & took some out on his wife. Don't know.

As I read the story, the domestic thing was mutual. Either way, it sounds like he's gained some perspective and wants to be a better person. Can't fault him for that.

Strange story there. That is a fat wad of cash he walked away from. I could put up with a lot of BS for that. Hell I put up with a lot of BS already, and for a fraction of what he was getting.

Best of luck to him.

Let me tell you, his first $30,000 a year job will get him back in the NFL faster than a Jake C. pass hits the dirt three feet in front of the receiver. I hope he puts it together. If he's disillusioned, now is the time to work on it. One year away isn't going to hurt him if it puts the passion back in his head. Good luck sir.

A year away to gain some perspective and turn him into a better player in the long-term. Analogous I think is the efforts of academics. I have a lot of friends pursuing master's degrees right now. It seems like the ones who suffer the most burn-out are those that have never known what it's like to work a normal job and be on that side of the fence. Just doing something different can be a huge boost to what you're doing now and help you figure out your true passions.

You didn't read the article, did you?

The last couple of years have hit the former Hawkeyes pretty hard for walking away or being turned away from the NFL. I was sure Sash and Spevey would get picked up and I think Tony Moeaki will get picked up once he heals. Does anybody know what Gallery and Steinbach are up to. I know Jared Devries and last I heard Casey Weigman are still living here in Clear Lake. Jared Devries is helping coach the local high school team and recently was part of a group in a 5 million farmland purchasel. He just built a big building for the farming operation here in town. It looks like an office and maybe a big shop for repairing farm equipment. The last part I'm assuming that's what the building is for.

Not sure what Steinbach is up to. I thought I'd heard Gallery was living in Northern Cali. Joined a biker gang called SOA.... just kidding just kidding.

I hate to see a person walk away from a lucrative career and do something tragic and depressing like start applying to grad school. That is when you know a 20-something has given up on life.

I thought I heard Dallas Clark purchased a lot of farmland in Iowa as well. I wonder if he was a part of the purchase you mention. From what I was told he bought a bunch of land and another former Hawkeye is farming it for him.

I sincerely think he's an idiot. He has the opportunity to play football at the highest level....something very few people ever have the chance to do.

He just walks away.

Did Wegher and Ballard room together at Iowa or something? I would think it would be tough to support your family playing the cello. I think there's more to the story, especially since he's still working out and didn't rule out going back to the nfl.

This is Gen Y Special Snowflake Syndrome on full display. "Fun" is what matters because they've had a bunch of d-bag blowhard professors telling them that they need to have fun in their job or be professionally fulfilled or some other fluff like "do what you love." I see 25 year old kids come through my job and they get paid a bill sixty base their first year out of law school. And then they complain that reading 300 contracts and making a list that says "Master Licensing Agreement dated as of April 20, 2010 by and between Dooshvalve, Inc. and Dooshbag Corp." at midnight on Friday night ain't fun. Yeah, no crap, kid. It ain't fun, it's hard work and that's why they pay your 25 year old butt 3-4x median salary in this country even though you don't know jack squat.

I was destined to be a Playboy photographer, 'twas my dream from the time I was 8 and found my first crusty, stuck together Playboy. But it wasn't meant to be. I'm sure once Mr. Ballard experiences that exhilarating feeling of closing a $10,000 variable annuity transaction in Cedar Rapids he'll come to his senses. Let's just hope he doesn't turn into Fridge Perry too quickly.

Back off bro. He's going to finish his Bachelor's in Art, and then go to grad school. Remember next time you get a latte, that your barista might have won an Orange Bowl.
