An open transition three is one of the best shots you can get, why would they pass that up?

Depends on who takes the shot and what your other options are. You should never shoot a 3 in favor of a layup.

I understand what you are saying, but Iowa didn't have a Stauskas, Hulls, Thomas, Harris, or Hardaway type player that could hit one on a regular basis.

There were multiple players that shot under 30%, the odds are far from in your favor that Iowa was going to hit one of the best shots as you describe. Iowa had one proven 3-pt shooter heading into last season and McCabe had an awful shooting year.

I know we had a lot of poor shooters last year, but we also had very limited options in the half court too, especially against good teams. Iowa struggled to create shots so there is a good chance that they wouldn't get a better look than the one they got in transition.

Plus just saying Iowa's shooter only have a 30% chance of knocking down a transition three isn't accurate. I'm sure the Iowa coaches track that stat but it's not available anywhere online. I know Marble and Gesell had to take a lot of tough 3's toward the end of possesions, I would imagine their open 3 point percentage is quite a bit higher their overall 31-33%.

Sure you should. I would take an open 3 over a contested lay up for most of the wing and guard players on the roster. You think McCabe or Ogelsby are finishing at the rim over a good defender? Clemmons and Gesell both struggled finishing in transition at times too.

If the offense has the numbers, 2 on 1 or 3 on 2, you should be able to get an uncontested shot or two freethrows.

IMO there is a difference between a layup and a contested attempt at the rim.

Clemmons rarely struggled in transition...he made few mistakes. Gesell on the other hand...yeah he looked lost in transirion and Iowa got less out of his breaks...a lot less.

I don't mean to be a Debbie Downer here, but I have been reading so many posts that I believe are setting unrealistic expectations for this team. I love Iowa bball but everyone here seems to have a short memory regarding our woeful shooting. That should concern everyone more than it seemingly does. Also, Marble is the guy McCaffrey is hanging his hat on, and from what I've seen and heard, this is a huge problem. I do not believe he is a team guy and I question his mental (and physical) toughness. NBA talk last summer is not a team mindset. His many 1-14 shooting performances in mostly big games against superior athletes should also be a huge concern (i dont buy the injured thing, fran wouldve never let him get killed in the media if he couldve just said he was playing hurt, it was between the ears i think). I hope I'm wrong, but I see a lot of frustration with him this coming season when we play good teams.

Almost every time Clemmons screwed up he hustled and got the ball back, I like his spirit. Actually all of the B squad are to be commended for what they do on defense especially, and they did some scoring too. I think Clemmons made a key basket in the NIT
