Gesell shows he can be a quality guard

He was able to drive past their guards a couple times and finish layups. He has the shooting touch and the ball handling skills. His only drawback is defending faster bigger guards and that will happen in 10 games a year or so.

Any disputes on this?

I'm sure his D will improve, though remember he's battling an injury now. Mikey is going to be a hell of a player for the Hawks. We desperately missed his decision making, ball-handling, and most of all his scoring. Can't wait to see him next year. You know the kid has a tremendous work ethic and will do everything he can to get better and to make this team better. He's one that I highly doubt will have a sophomore slump.

Yeah, he showed this about two months ago.

Mike Gesell is one player that I am NOT worried about being a great hawk. I was sold on him the first time I saw him play.

i would like to see him with a higher release and push the ball less on his jumper, but not if its going to really mess with the results because hes pretty effective as-is

Yeah, not worried about Gesell.
Clemmons is the one who needs to improve. Some sketchy passing, but that can easily be rectified. I hope.

Good player who will get better. He's not super quick, and will struggle with Yogi Farrell type players, but he brings far more to the table than not. I'm happy he's a Hawkeye.

The question in other threads of who is going to pick up the slack when Marble has games like last night is answered in this thread. This kid is special. He is going to absolutely be deadly next year. Marble takes so much attention when he gets in the lane leaving Mike wide open on those curls.

I would not mess with his shooting. He will be playing against taller defenders his entire career. He will only be able to shoot effectively when he has an opening, and when you have an opening your release point is pretty much irrelevant.

I'm with fan33, I didn't know this issue was up in the air. Not like last night was a revelation for him and he emerged from being a poor player. We can do some big things next year if other Hawks play to Mike's level.

Hey, I have been on the gesell bandwagon from day 1. I have started a lot of threads praising his play.

Some people last nite were saying in game threads that we dont have any quality point guards.

Yeah people still ragging on our team after the deep NIT run.

That is why I started this thread, to reiterate that gesell on a bad foot scored 13 points in limited time, that he is athletic enough to get to the rim against athletic experienced guards.

He is a smart player, very smart player, and his defense will get better.

Woodbury shows he can be tall, any disputes on this?

There's tall, and then there's BB tall.

Tall = everything is proportional.

BB tall = shorter the neck, the "taller" you are on the court. More "useful" tall.

So, somebody needs to measure his neck length to determine if he's simply tall, or BB tall.
