Big Ten Hoops for 2013-2014: Who Returns, Where Iowa Fits

Here's a stab at the minutes.

Marble = 30
White = 25
Gesell = 25
Woodbury = 20
Basabe = 20

Olaseni = 17
Uthoff = 17
McCabe = 15
Clemmons = 15
Jok = 8
Oglesby = 8
Meyer = 0 (has to wait his turn...after Basabe and McCabe leave his RS sophomore year)

Ingram - Red shirt

Minutes will float around depending on foul trouble, who's hot, injuries, etc. I know everyone is going to pick a player and say this guy will get more or another player will get less. I'm just giving an example of how it could break down. Eleven guys are getting meaningful minutes. We are deep. We are pressing. We are running. We are always fresh on defense. That's some scary good depth.

This looks reasonable besides that I see Jok playing more

I think this looks pretty close to what is going to happen. The only thing I see diffently in the bottom. I see Ogelsby
and McCabe with less minutes and Jok and Clemmons with a little more.

Michigan will be fine at PG with Derrick Walton coming in and if GR3 doesn't leave they will be scary good with a Hard away clone in Zak Irvin coming off the bench.

I look for Iowa to finish 4th next year bumping Indiana with or without Zeller.

1. Michigan State

---------------

I said after the BIG tournament that I wouldn't be posting here anymore until next season as there was really nothing to discuss. There still isn't. I've received I don't know how many private messages from Hawkeye fans on my account asking me to come back and say something so I figure I'd reply with some response just to free up my inbox.

This list is laughable (laughable even taking the Wisconsin ranking out of the equation). I'd peg Iowa right into the 3-5 range of next seasons predictions. I'd say that's about right with a commensurate NCAA tournament berth in 4-7 seed range. Michigan State will be the odds on favorite and rightfully so. Izzo is a proven coach and winner and if anyone doesn't think he can make up for the loss of Nix with improvements to returning players and/or high ranked recruits then that person is delusional.

The Wisconsin ranking is also absurd and I'm sure relates in some way to your lack of history of the league outside of anything that happened outside of the years 1982-1993. Judging by your avatar you are still stuck in the Hayden Fry/Raveling/Tom Davis years. Steve Yoder doesn't coach Wisconsin anymore and Don Morton doesn't coach the football team. Oh and there's new technology called cell phones and the inter-web. Welcome to 2013.

Wisconsin has NEVER finished outside of the Top 4 in the league and if it didn't happen this past year after losing Jordan Taylor, losing Josh Gasser to injury a week before the season and having our most fouled post man reduced to shooting jump shots from the Free Throw line (Ryan Evans), then it's never going to happen under Bo's watch. So Wisconsin loses Jared Berggren, Mike Bruesewitz and Ryan Evans, so what? Good defenders but mediocre offensive players at best, particularly Evans and Bruesewitz. Bo Ryan has had to replace much much better players than those guys before. Wisconsin also returns their starting point guard (Gasser) who also happens to be the best defender Bo Ryan has ever had. But the biggest reason (outside of Bo Ryan) that Wisconsin will contend for a title next year is this: Sam Dekker. Everyone that follows Wisconsin knows that Dekker is about to absolutely bust out. Outside of Dekker, Wisconsin brings in their best recruit since, well, Sam Dekker. That is Bronson Koenig. Duke and North Carolina offered him and Coach K and Roy Williams came up to see him at least 10 times between the two. The only reason he isn't ranked higher is because he commited early and broke his hand his junior year and didn't play HS or much of the AAU season. There are also reports that Diamond Stone (the #2 ranked recruit in 2015) is on the verge of picking Wisconsin. The future is bright.

On non-Wisconsin related evaluations I'd say that some of the bottom feeders will soon be getting some payback. Purdue is going to have Top 3 talent going forward. Northwestern returns guys off of injuries that will be major factors in them possibly vying for a tournament bid, they'll bite quite a few teams. Penn State returns Frazier and Chambers knows what he is doing, look at how they played down the stretch on a very depleted and young team. I doubt any of those three teams are going to challenge for a title but they'll get many more wins that this season.

So much is in flux that it's really impossible to create a solid list because of how much depends on early entrants. On first look I'd say that the BIG takes a step back from what it was this season. Most of that is due to Indiana probably taking a big step back and while Michigan has good talent coming back, Trey Burke is just sooo good that you wonder what losing him will do to Michigan. The top won't be as good but the bottom 4 should be MUCH better. NW, PSU, Neb and Purdue should all be better than this years version. Minnesota? Your guess is as good as mine.

Dekker vs the world in Wiskys frontcourt,eh? Good luck. Wisky is dropping like a rock,or a Stone,who is moving to Florida and will not be coming back to the cold climes again,unless it is to Marquette.

Wisky is going to be the Liliputians vs Godzilla next year,with a 5 guard lineup. Good luck.

Frank Kaminsky, Vitto Brown and Nigel Hayes say hello.

But as Steve Kerr said, "I'm convinced that Bo Ryan could contend in the league with whatever players are on the team. The names may change but the winning doesn't."

It's laughable yet it seems like u agree with most everything save my thoughts on Wisconsin. Sorry but I just don't see the half court shots to win, the banked in off backboard there's to force OT, the 27 foot buzzer beaters v PSU to go your way next year. Every break went your way. That's why you didn't finish in 6th place this year. And you lose your muscle and front court. The streak ends next season.

I swear you don't even watch the games. 12+ seasons of finishing 4th or higher and usually in contention for the title coming into the last week or so and you still don't get it.

Every break went our way? Well Michigan hit an off balance 3 from NBA range to take the lead in that game, a game in which we controlled throughout. Then we handled them on a neutral court in the BIG tourney. Was that a lucky break?

Or how about the losses that went against us that will most likely be wins next year, i.e. the Minnesota game that we had salted away until we choked it down the stretch? For every game that we won there was a game we lost that could have went the other way. Lost by 2 to MSU while shooting 29% from the FT line in that game. We almost broke the NCAA record for best FT % the year prior.

When you make predictions like that all it makes you look like is extremely jealous and small. You don't think Bo Ryan can replace 3 role players. WTF does he do EVERY season? He replaces guys with someone you never heard of.

And I didn't make a list of how I thought the BIG would go next season other than saying MSU would be #1 and Wisconsin would be somewhere in the Top 4.

Oh and Iowa won't have EVERY break of the schedule go their way next year. You played MSU, OSU, Michigan once and all the bottom feeders twice. I'm eagerly awaiting what day you'll schedule the Wisconsin game on. Hayden Fry night at Carver followed by free fish fry hosted by Tim Dwight in the parking lot?

You are what your record says you are and we were 12-6 in the BIG and backed it up by beating Indiana (again) and Michigan (again) on a neutral floor of the United Center. We make our own breaks and don't need to pray that Doug Gottlieb pimps us hard enough on CBS to try and sniff the bubble.

Owned.

And losing in the first round to a 12 seed, you left that out.

I didn't need to leave that one out, everyone knows it. You are what your record says you are not some imaginary hypothetical in fantasy land that your moderator wishes was the truth. They also know that Wisconsin made the NCAA tournament and Iowa didn't (again). Fran has never finished better than 6th, Bo has never finished below 4th and he's usually contending for a title.

Except you needed a prayer from Brust to fall to force OT against Michigan and Jackson needed a pretty damn lucky bounce to send the Iowa game to OT.

I wouldnt exactly call those making your own breaks.

pwned

If Brown and Hayes were so good, why couldn't the beat out the mere ''role'' players?
Bottom line, Bergrenn,Evans and Bruser were the reason that Wisky had a chance this year.
Without them, Wisky becomes a guard dependent team,with slow white guards,after Marshall leaves.
Jackson,Gasser,Brust and Koenig are not carrying this team to a top 4 finish in this league.

Uh because Brown and Hayes are currently in high school in Ohio.....

We've always had slow white guys. Marshall played spot minutes this year for the most part because he wasn't a good decision maker, yet.

There's always some guy or some important player named so and so that Wisconsin has to replace and Bo always does. You think Berggren, Evans and Bruesewitz are harder to replace than Leuer, Nankivil? Or Butch, Stiemsma? Or Krabbenhoft and Landry? Or Wilkinson and Morley? We'll be fine and Bo will replace Berggren with Frank Kaminsky, Vitto Brown and Nigel Hayes. Ryan Evans was cut by his High School team and had one scholarship offer (Wisconsin). You don't think Bo can replace Ryan Evans? You didn't think we could replace Jordan Taylor last year and now it's Wisconsin can't replace Ryan Freaking Evans?!!!

Pfft, please.

He backed up his reasoning with valid points. It's not really that unfathomable.

Every break went our way? Well Michigan hit an off balance 3 from NBA range to take the lead in that game, a game in which we controlled throughout. Then we handled them on a neutral court in the BIG tourney. Was that a lucky break?

Wisconsin did not control that game throughout. They were behind a majority of the second half. The neutral court win against Michigan was good but the home court blowout loss to Purdue was really bad.

Wisconsin had 2 games that they lost that could have easily gone the other way. They won at least 4 by the skin of their teeth. That's pretty fortunate.

When you make predictions like that all it makes you look like is extremely jealous and small. You don't think Bo Ryan can replace 3 role players. WTF does he do EVERY season? He replaces guys with someone you never heard of.

I don't think it's jealousy at all. I think it's objectively looking at each team and what they (are likely to) return. You can look at the rosters of the teams he listed ahead of Wisconsin and make a legit argument why you think they will be better. Pretty simple.

And I didn't make a list of how I thought the BIG would go next season other than saying MSU would be #1 and Wisconsin would be somewhere in the Top 4.

Yes, because Iowa schedules when they play Wisconsin every year. Obviously they wanted to make sure they played the Badgers on the 20th anniversary of Chris Street's death. Stay classy.

Based on the last 2 seasons it's not unrealistic to think Iowa will beat Wisconsin 75% of the time...considering their lone win barely happened. Inactive Rodent will be missed around here next year. Did we see much of him during Wisconsin's less than stellar non conference run?
