McCaffery leans on May when it’s crunch time

I've been impressed with May's leadership this year. There have been times he has addressed his teammates on the floor when needed. The latest example was at halftime of the Virgiina game. He went and spoke with Clemmons after he failed to foul a player and it lead to a 3 pointer.

I don't believe that was because Clemmons didn't foul. He simply didn't switch and left Virginia's best shooter wide open.

Although not completely unheard of, you generally don't see teams use a foul to prevent an offensive opportunity as time winds down in the first half, even when they have a foul to give. You simply don't know what the foul situation is going to be in the second half.

I like it when Fran says: He’s good enough to play at Iowa because he’s a warrior. He’s a champion. He’s a worker. He became a student of the game.â€￾

Eric has certainly become a steadying force for the team. when things are getting troublesome, he always steps up and settle things down, and he is scoring baskets at the most crucial times......

He has always been on of my favorite Hawks from his freshman year......

I think it's also very obvious May wants to continue to wear that Iowa uniform a couple more games. He most definitely is not a senior going through the motions in this NIT...which will have far more long term benefits for the underclassmen IMO. May wants to win a couple at MSG. I LOVE his leadership during the season and I think he's taken it to another level in the postseason. Most importantly...The team respects him.

Yes and I saw Fran on the sideline slapping his own wrist to motion that he wanted to use the foul.

If that is what Fran was going for, it was pretty poor strategy on his part. No way you should direct one of only two players that can run the point (since Gesell was questionable) to foul to prevent an opportunity that could be well contested without fouling.

Are you sure Fran wasn't just pleading with the ref after the fact since Harris drained the 3?

I'm pretty sure Fran wanted to give the foul there.

Interesting. Not the best strategy, in my opinion, but AC did end up with only one foul.

Yeah, I'm not sure what I would have done...definitely not questioning Fran. I do like that he's even thinking along those lines...a little outside of the box. I like not being predictable and keeping the opponent on their toes at all times.

Clemmons hasn't been in foul trouble all year, having him give a foul at the end of the first half when he had one or zero fouls is not a risky strategy.

Bobby Hansen interviewed asst coach Speraw at halftime. The Hawks had a foul to give and were instructed to foul. They did not execute the strategy according to the coach.

Clemmons executed the foul fine. The ref didn't execute blowing his whistle.

I like this. We have to point out that the refs miss calls when we win. It sounds like we're making excuses, whining, etc. if we only do it when we lose. The ref blew the call. We have improved and matured enough to win despite some bad calls and a career day by a player from the other team.

I have countless memories of guys that have career games and beat us. We could be ranked in the top 10 and it feels like the guy can't miss no matter what we do...making something like 20 out of 31 shots from the field; 5 out of 8 from 3; 9 out of 12 from the line; and topping it off with 14 rebounds and 5 assists.

Oh wait...this actually happened. The date was December 19, 1987 and these are Lafester Rhodes' stats. We lost 102-100 in OT and it is still the most fun I've ever had watching Iowa lose a game. Cyclone fans hadn't taught me to cheer against ISU yet and it was just a great college basketball game...don't get me wrong I wanted Iowa to win. I dedicate this post to any Cyclone fan that visits this site and actually saw that game. This is the 1st and last post I will ever dedicate to any Cyclone fan...probably.
