Dauster: Conference record overblown when it comes to tournament profiles

Yeah. I'm just surprised that if Iowa wins 2 out of 3 conference games, it will go down in the RPI, even if that second round game is against somebody like IU or Michigan. Especially since the RPI seems to give so much weight to playing good teams.

Maybe the guy is wrong. He's just one man.

RPI is 75% SOS, and only 25% results, so playing teams ranked worse than you, especially at home, isn't going to improve your rating much, if at all. It will more depend on how the teams around us do.

I don't know if you mean that literally or not, but that's why it's my opinion that the RPI is flawed, if that's true. Call me crazy, but I would think that the actual results of the games should mean a little more than just 25%.

I'm confused here, '77.

Do you like or dislike the RPI?

Well I guess in theory that is what KenPom is doing but his results are not "real time" as his data gets better as the sample size increases. At the end of the season KenPom seems to be the best measure but people have to be patient for it to garner the best results. And KenPom changes yearly I assume as he collects more data and makes tweaks to his formulas.

I guess I can see the argument for increasing the 25% for wins. The question is then how do you tier the percent for getting wins. Maybe you only deserve 25% credit for beating a 303 SOS team at home in the preseason. I don't think you should get credited much for beating absolutely terrible teams at home. I want teams punished for scheduling those garbage teams but that is a whole different topic. I feel that there are far too many D1 basetball teams currently. You can keep scholarships but they should make a FBS for bball at somepoint with teams. There is just way too much garbage out there.

If what this joker says in his article is even close to the truth, why even have conferences or conference tournaments......

It is all irrelevant......

How about we belittle Iowa's conference record because of scheduling. Yeah that's the ticket......

Penn State should be in the Dance because they beat Michigan, after all conference records are meaningless.....

Why is he a joker? Do you anything about him as a journalist?

Hey, joker, what does: Do you anything about him as a journalist mean......

Please let me know, fool......

Believe everything you read, then you are an ignorant fool....

....as they should be.

As others have said...final win/loss records to an educated and caring selection committee doesn't mean one iota in and of itself.

Who against, where and when your wins were count.

Cupcake wins, final league positioning, rankings...all that hollow carnival barking offers zero value-added to a resume.

Something, thank Gawd, college FB is about to embrace, once the sham BCS is laid to rest.

Sorry he didn't say Iowa was in the tournament. I guess his article really ruffled your feathers.

I actually think most journalist are garbage as they stick to the old cliches and don't tell us anything.

I actually think Iowa should be in the tournament if the tournament was actually designed to get the best 68 teams in. The tournament is not designed that way so Iowa could be on the outside looking in if they don't win at least 3 more games.

Relax, there is noting to get that outraged about.

About as far from outraged as a person can be, ICHawk, just don't want to take time away from your task. Could you be so kind as to make a list of the teams you would punish for scheduling garbage teams, Please list them alphabetically as a personal favor to me. ....

Actually it would probably be a lot easier and quicker to list the teams that don't schedule garbage teams as almost all D1 teams schedule garbage teams, some more than others.....

No problem. It's all cool, Bro......

Here's to watching he Hawks in the Dance......

I hope Iowa gets in!

Like I said if the tournament was actually created to get the best teams in Iowa would be in. However there are autobids from the MEAC, SWAC and crappy conferences like that. The tournament is only really desisgned to get maybe the best 20 teams in and after that it's just a mess.
