RPI / Sagarin / Pomeroy for 2-18-2013

NW is a game ahead of Nebraska. Nebraska doesn't look to have any wins left on their schedule. NW has a home game against PSU that I would put at 50-50...PSU playing well and NW is about out of players.

I don't want Ohio State to lose 3 out of 5. They need to beat Illinois so we are positioned to finish 2 games ahead of Illinois in the standings. I want to be 2 full games ahead of Illinois in the standings at 10-8 and have the head-to-head win come Selection Sunday...assuming our only loss is to Indiana before the 2nd round of the BTT.

Illinois is just about a lock at this point, as long as they beat Penn St and Nebraska they will be in. They have better signature wins than just about anybody in college basketball.

I think Illinois loses 3 out of their final 5 (@ Mich, @ Iowa, @ OSU) and finishes 8-10 in the league. An 8-10 conference record and an overall 21-11 record isn't a lock from where I stand. Their 7 losses in conference have come by an avg of 13 points, our avg loss is by 7.

I totally agree that they are a lock at 8-10. I don't think the Selection Committee can pass on a team (Iowa) that finished 2 full games ahead in the standings and just beat them head-to-head. It might be a little easier if we're only 1 game ahead in the standings.

They are top 30 in KenPom and RPI, just outside there in Sagarin with wins over Gonzaga on the road, Butler on a neutral court and OSU and Indiana at home. Road losses to good teams won't hurt their RPI, they will be in at 8-10.

What a fun topic. If Ohio State loses to Minnesota and Illinois and finish 9-9, we could have sole possession of 5th and it will help ou RPI. Could they really take 3 teams that finish behind us and leave us out? I doubt that.

If Ohio State beats both of them there is a good chance we finish 2 games above 7th and that would make it tough to leave us out too. I think we would be in either way so I'm kinda hoping for an Ohio State choke job.

Normally I would agree with you but Illinois has one heck of a resume. Even if they finish with a losing conference record they probably get in before Iowa.

Hopefully they lose 3 of they're last 5 and we win at least 4 of our last 5. That would take care of that tiebreaker.

Wouldn't. That would tie us at 10-8 and they would be the higher seed. I don't see them losing to Minnesota but they could certainly lose their last 4. That would move us ahead of them, and match us up with Wisconsin in the second round if we beat Penn St in the first round (ideal situation).

I hear what you are saying but the committee doesn't compare one team against another (unless maybe it's for the final spot). They look at each team individually and consider the entire body of work. It's somewhat unfortunate, but not unprecedented to have a team lose head to head but get the at-large bid. That's what happened to Iowa in 1997-98 with Indiana.

Enough with the weak OOC schedule... who frickin' cares who played and won or lost against these teams back in October, November and December. It's about NOW and it's also about how you play against your competition.. . NOW

Screw the RPI #'s and ratings.. does anyone watch college BB games anymore.... or just get up in the morning and look at numbers?

Sheesh... how about an objective scientific research survey of geeks/pundits/analysts like me who have now watched over 200 games since conference games began in January?

I got hooked back up with Direct TV and my "job" allows me to watch and DVR these games... I've watched games and teams from every conference, every region, mid-majors and all over.

It's called the "EYEBALL" POLL combined with the "WHAT HAPPENED BEHIND THE CLOSE LOSS OR WIN" POLL.

The Hawkeyes are playing too good, too deep, too hungry and too well... along with good coaching ... NOT to win 5 more games and get in... despite the FRICKIN" STOOPID RIP of 77 or whatever it is.

Thanks Jon for the opportunity for the rant... btw your weekly Big Ten Power Rankings suck... they are the same as the conference standings... How about this for some POWER RANKINGS..

1. MI ST
2. IU
3. MI
4. IA
5. WI
6. IL
7. OH ST
8 Minnesota
9. PSU
10. NW
11.Nebby
12.Purdue

Any frickin' thoughts?

I know what you're saying is true. I also know there are several people in that room and only 1 has to say "Hey guys. Did anyone notice Iowa beat Illinois by 13 points and finished 2 games ahead of them in the Big Ten standings? They also are ahead of Minnesota. Maybe we need to take a closer look. Wow! Iowa lost a lot of really close games on the road to some of our locks. Wisconsin was lucky to beat them at all."

You get the idea. I'm just hoping someone in the room has some common sense or applies the "eyeball test" to steal another poster's term.

2 thoughts:

1) Dont drink in the morning
2) Stop spamming the board with this same post. I've read it 3 times in two different threads

RPI: 77 (Up 11 spots)
Sagarin: 33 (Up 2 spots)
Pomeroy: 29 (Up 12 spots, season high)

I love to look at different types of rankings but I am sorry. We should not be 29th in any sort of poll at the moment. Just like Minny should not have been 13th in any ranking.

Why do you quote below your post? Are you in Australia?
