Basabe becoming a leader

More vocal? Maybe. Leader?

I actually don't think that's too wild to consider. His overall attitude is much better and he seems to have matured an awful lot since last season. The older guys can see that and appreciate it, and the young guys wouldn't know the difference.

Basabe has always been very articulate on post-game shows and folks like Bobby & Dolph seem to always speak very fondly of him. I think perhaps his progression into a vocal leader is following in the footsteps of guys like Cole, Gatens and I would say to a degree May this year. These guys don't have the court swagger of White, Woodbury, or Marble and perhaps aren't the most vocal but by their senior seasons you could see them pulling others aside and really serving as mentors. This is one of the key ingredients lost during the Lickliter stint and will eventually help get the Hawks back into the top half of the conference.

He's been a guy thats lead more by example this year. He may not be very vocal, but that's not always the only way to lead. Numerous times this year this team has gotten into mid game slumps and started playing flat. Basabe has stepped up in those occasions by either hitting a simple jump shot, blocking a shot, or attacking the baseline and bringing an overall intensity.

I think he seems to be more of a leader on the court this year also. As another poster pointed out when I questined RM leadership, Its hard to tell. But I think you can geta idea of who is leading out there during games

Basketball IQ is not one of Mel's strong points, so I'd disagree with the "intelligent guy" comment big time.

I wouldn't refer to Mel as having a "low" basketball IQ in the first place. He's obviously a smart guy, though. Just watch one of his interviews.

Agree there is a distinction between being a smart (or not so smart) guy vs an individual's basketball IQ. However, Mel's basketball IQ is not a strength of his. Not knocking the kid. Simply stating a fact.

Basketball IQ has little to do with leadership skills. Hell, even basketball talent doesn't have a lot to do with whether or not a guy has those skills. I've seen plenty of players at the high school level, in multiple sports, who are their team's strongest leader despite not being one of the best players. Iowa has that right now with May.

Dude, you we the one who literally said that you disagreed with him being an intelligent guy "big time." No one even stated that he had high basketball IQ.

I said he was intelligent, you disagreed with it "big time," and then you started randomly rambling about basketball IQ, which we all agree is different than being intelligent. Which, by the way, you "disagree" with. "Big time."

I'd like to hear some sort of supporting argument for this comment. Mel plays well and hard, rarely makes stupid mistakes, takes makeable shots, pretty damn good help defense. To me low BB IQ is bad shots, bad turnovers, lack of ball/court awareness. Not seeing this in Mel. And I think you're stereotyping.
