Quality Wins, Bad Losses - Iowa's resume is a weird study

Please tell me if stormin wins the bet PantherMania gets banned.... I cannot wait to take a day off from work when we make the NCAA TOURNAMENt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Have faith in Fran.

To be 92nd in the RPI and trying to convince yourself you're a bubble team in mid February is laughable...

We see what we see... laughing last is always the best..

and to Dunder.. before... you got that right. Need not any upsets in the mid major and low major conferences to end another bid or so.

You would have been such a great trolol if you came around after the UNI game last year.... Keep tryn buddy... You will make it

He claims he isn't a "troll" but a "realist". He reminds me alot of ILHawk. They both hardly ever have anything good to say about Iowa yet both claim to be fans.

Funny Dave. Trolling involves 2 basic angle. The first is an attempt to provoke a negative response. The 2nd is deception. Ok, I'll play your insulting game. Technically your repeated use of the troll work fits #1. The other is not staying on topic and you struggle with that too.

Put up a thread with hawkeye trivia and see who wins (ME or YOU). Going back almost 40 years ago or earlier (except the Lick years when I quit paying attention). I'm not a fake Hawkeye. Not all negative responses (though I do think the Hawks need to beat IN to beat out IL if IL finished 8-10 or higher. I believe it will take that with a 10-8 record. To sub for not beating IU will take 2 wins in B1G. Yes, I'm a realist on the pathetic SOS schedule. You have to deserve to get to the dance. I don't see 8 B1G teams getting in and even if IL and MN collapse (very possible), Iowa doesn't get in by beating only ISU and Wisky. Lot's of low ranked teams can claim equivalent.

I am certainly not one of the more vocal about KF and football, though I did notice several years ago the fall off on speed. And I attribute some of the problems to the rhabdo incident. I am critical of his repeatedly running rb's into angry lines and then seemingly be puzzled at the results.

I don't think Iowa is back yet and I'm not sure how good Woodbury will be. Passes well and that's about it. When I coach or as a fan, I don't like anyone out there without being at least some kind of scoring threat. Makes a team very vulnerable to smart coaching. I make no apologies that I don't like coaches that throw chairs or kick tables. Horrible role models due that. In a place like IC, role model coaches are needed. I also don't particularly get enthused about coaches that don't change what is not working.

MG will be a fine player
Clemmons will be decent.
White is a terrific player and would be about any programs #6 minimum.
Basabe and Oleseani represent a lot of potential and deserve more playing time.
Marble has come a long way for a guy who basically couldn't/wouldn't go left last year.
May and McCabe are solid serviceable players who would look better if there was more balance.

I'm not a great fan of Frans game coaching.
He's a huge improvement on Lick, though I think Lick and Alford were somewhat victims of circumstance...Pierre Pierce (and other players with problems under Lick).
I'm not seeing a huge improvement in incoming players with the exception of getting won away from Wisky. That should make things better next year to make the Dance that likely won't happen this year. Recruiting has to get better or we go the way of football long term. I don't see a championship team coming with these players as is.

I'm not a fan of blaming the refs. In any season, you will lose some due to a few calls. Calls go both ways over the course of a season. There are a lot of ref blamers. What makes games appear to be decided by refs is having lesser talent and individual plays consistently become important and then calls stand out. It still gets back to talent and coaching.

I am not a fan of pointing hate towards individual players. Huge dif between analysis and hate. What I find funny is that you and a few others don't call that out. It's bush league stuff.

If Iowa doesn't make the dance, it will be lack of SOS, losing a few they shouldn't have and lack of big wins.

Have an nice evening.

I wasn't trolling you IL, I was merely making the point that you both claim to be "realistic fans", I am not expecting either one of you to admit that you think Iowa is going to win the B1G tourney or the NCAA tourney but seriously, you both rarely have anything nice to say about Iowa. PM more so than you, but still most of your posts that I see are negative towards Iowa. You claim the fans need to get perspective of this years team but let them make fools of themselves if Iowa doesn't make the tourney. And if they make the tourney, then we all win.

Iowa is not a bubble team right now.
I don't believe anyone has mentioned that in quite awhile, esp after the series of losses.

In fact, I'm writing an article on that right now.

Definitely.
Actually there are 37 at large bids, regardless of who gets them. But what he's trying to say is absolutely correct. If a team that's out of tournament consideration wins a conference tournament, it takes a spot away from the bubble.

It'd also be interesting to see if multiple close losses to good teams means anything. To me, losing on the road to a ranked team by single digits is more impressive than beating a bad team at home by 20.

It worked for FSU one year getting in at 16-14 in "the toughest conference" and the only thing they proved that season was they could lose to good teams, IIRC, they lost to every to 50 RPI team and were 6-10 in the ACC. If my memory serves me correctly, it was 1993/4 and they won their first round game.

Butler moving to the A-10 is a move that does not favor the Hawks if they finish 9-9, but there are teams like Murray State that could lose and may get in. Any Pac-10 team not Arizona, UCLA or Oregon winning that tournament is not good. So many things can happen.

Yeah true, that's what I meant.

There are plenty of people here that call others out when going after individual players.

Take a look at the 7,506 threads on Oglesby and our responses to folks that do this.

Analysis of players is good, but saying guys should leave or not shoot and essentially blaming losses on them is wrong.
The fact is, the coaches believe in their players and that is the way it is, like it or not.

Your post there lost me when you think the only thing Woodbury does good is pass. This makes little sense to me and it is from what I have seen. The only thing Woodbury really lacks is strength. He will change your mind next season, he is too fundamentally sound to not improve from year one to year two.

Analysis of May/McCabe...ugh, on rosters with much better overall talent, well I don't really have to say it.

Lumping Basabe/Olaseni in the same category well, not sure about that either...Basabe is a more complete player today than Olaseni probably ever will be, not a knock on either. Basabe is and always has been a 4-year player, I am excited to see if the light switch fully goes on with him as a Senior like it did for Cole, Winters, Bartles and others.

Olaseni gives Iowa a guy with size and athleticism they haven't had for some time and it won't surprise me if you see he and Woodbury on the floor a lot in the future, maybe after Mel graduates, just a hunch.

Oh yeah, have you seen the Okafor kid play? I asked you after you told me to ask you again.

We can disagree about Woodbury. Passing is a great skill. He needs to shoot. I do think that base personality is a part of the issue and not sure that will change. To be good most have to play with a bit of anger and that's not there. Alford recruited a kid from the area to play at MO State and he'd finally get mad about 6 minutes a game and that was about it. Yes strength is an issue, but so is hand quickness. To me playing a kid that isn't a scoring threat is like playing closed right field baseball.

Okafor is one I haven't seen.

I truly hope this is a good turning point for Iowa. I went to school in the show me state. I picked up a few things. Not sold on Fran yet. I won't be surprised to see it end badly. Won't be surprised if he turns the corner. Also for the record I'm an economic analyst. So I'm pretty direct and dry in my statements. I'll try and work on it....some.

When I was a kid in the mid late 70's and thru the 80's I was as big of a fan as anyone. HF made being from Iowa fun and portrayed the "I've got fight" image. Something sorely missing from Iowa athletics currently. Two biggest turnoffs were the sorry state of basketball (especially with Lick playing his son) and Ferentz not making changes to scratch where it itches...

bottom line is we gotta go 6-1 to finish the regulr season (or 5-2 if we beat IU), and draw anyone but Michigan in the 2nd round of the B1G Tourney
