RB situation

On TOS there is a argument going on with who was the better back last year or who will be the better RB next year and who will be getting the starting position. I thought I would bring it on over here because I think it's a very interesting topic.

IMO it's very clear who was the better back last year and basing everything off of last year the starting RB should be A Rob. Yeah I know lots of you guys are drinking that BW kool aid and im sure it tastes really good but I just don't see how you can think he should be the starter based on last year. Because from what I saw A Rob was the better back. He had better vision, which could contribute to him having one more year in the system then BW. I also thought that A Rob had a better burst of speed once he go the handoff. As someone had pointed out to me on TOS BW didn't have as good of blocking as A Rob did... HAHAHA I thought that was a joke. They both were playing for the same team and if I remember right A Rob got stuffed in the backfield as well. But if you want to make that argument then ok fine I'll play it. I still look back and see A Rob having a more explosive burst after the handoff to hit the whole.

I know theres some people saying "oh well this is just another BW hater who thinks white guys can't pay RB and are slow". You got me wrong if thats what you think. I thought BW had better speed in the open field then A Rob but I thought A Rob had better burst as you can tell from my above statements. I know some of you will also point out to me that BW had an amazing Orange Bowl performance. No doubt about that and you make a very valid point. From what I remember in the Orange Bowl BW had his biggest runs on the left and not the right which was where Bulaga is blocking and from what someone pointed out to me is away from where the DE NFL prospect of GT is (if I'm wrong on that play or on that info please correct me).

A few more things I would like to say is that I thought BW progressed a ton throughout the season and is with no doubt one of the most athletic guys on the team. A Rob I thought stayed more consistent and didn't show as much growth but from last season I still think A Rob should be the starter if there was a game today (that is of course if all the injuries are 100%).

With that said I want to know your opinion and get some Hawkeye football talk going on this site. I feel like it's been a little bare over here as far as football talk on the forums go. So if you wanna take a shot at me go for it im down and ready to get some football talk going. :D

Bulaga was blocking Morgan from GT if i remember right....and he killed him

I also think ARob is the most complete back on the roster but im excited to see the competition.

I'm not going to take a shot at your opinion but from my standpoint all I can say is "who cares"? We have three very capable backs and arguing which one is better is a moot point right now. I have faith that no matter who emerges #1 they will be a stud, whether it be ARob, Wegher, Hampton, or other...

Bingo. Three guys fighting for that first spot on the depth chart can only serve to make them better as a unit.

I'm excited to see what happens when Hampton, Wegher, and Robinson are all on the field at the same time.

I read all of that and no mention of Hampton in regards to the running back situation... I am pretty sure that he will be the number 1 when Eastern Ill rolls into town. That is based off of his performance in a full season as well in a backup role.

A-Rob is a solid #2

BW will see the field one way or another.

Hampton is going to have his earn his spot, just like Robinson or Wegher. There are no guarantees, especially coming off a knee injury.

Only reason I didn't mention Hampton is because I was only comparing BW and A Rob off of last season and who should be the starter between them. But I almost agree with you about Hampton being #1. If he didn't have such a big lay off and a knee injury there would be no doubt IMO him being #1.

I agree with everyone though its nice we have good competition at RB and as long as they all help the team and give us a good show I don't care who it is either.

I agree, but since he was given the green light to practice in the spring I don't think his knee is anything to worry about. If it was he would be sitting out Spring ball.

Agree that they all will have to earn their carries but I am in the Hampton camp as well, I don't care who plays or starts but I think after sitting all of last year watching two freshmen i think (hope) he will be hungry as hell when the season starts.

A-Rob was the more consistent back last year. BW showed that he's better in the red zone, particularly at the goal line. BW also showed he's a better receiver.

And I also think that Jewel showed more than both of them in limited 2008 duty.

I think A-Rob will be the "named" starter, but we're going to see all 3 backs featured prominently until one of them steps up and proves he's worthy of the extra carries - and I think that will be Hampton.

I also think we'll see some multi-back sets, and maybe even BW sent in motion or line up out of the slot.

1 thing is for sure, and that is JH has the best tattoo of all the backs.
I think A-Rob (if healthy) will start 1st game, but after that, I think it's musical chairs all season, all three capable, and could possibly start on many big ten teams.

Because of the inexperienced OL I think the most important trait is yards after contact (man I miss Greene). I'm not sure if that is Adam or Jewell, but I don't think BW has as much size. I think he is a great running back, but i'm just not sure if he will get the holes he needs.

I'm leaning towards JH, but I'm not really sure why.

Is there any chance BW will redshirt, and pull it off if needed? I know i'm getting greedy for the long run, but it seems like a shame to have 3 soph rb's. Has there been any talk of a position change for him lately? Official word? That was pretty common speculation during the season but I haven't heard anything about that since his orange bowl TD.

Also remember Robinson isn't practicing because of a shoulder injury, so its not like he is getting a leg up on Hampton (no pun intended).

I like your analysis, but I'm not sure if it supports your argument. I think all your evidence suggests that ARob was the best back last year, and I would agree with that.

If the question is, "Who should start next year?" my answer is: Whoever is the best player.

If the question is, "Who will start at the beginning of next year?" my answer is: probably ARob. I don't think any of us will really know that because it will be decided in spring and fall practice, not necessarily how they performed last year.

If the question is, "Who will end up getting the most playing time next year?" my answer is: Hampton. I love how ARob keeps his balance and keeps his legs churning. I love how BW has breakaway speed. My recollection is that Hampton is a hybrid of those two. If he can perform as well behind an arguably worse O-line than 2008 and he shows he can block, I think he will take the reins as the featured back in the 2nd or 3rd game.

I think both guys should be commended for a job well done. They found out that the season is long and brutal on there bodies as seen in the Bowl game(ARob).I thought as the season went along that they started to understand how fast they had to hit the whole to be successful. They complimented each other real well.

jewell is the best and it is not really that close. Wait and see. Go look at the old tapes---he would have had a Greene kind of year if he had started that year.

According to Rob Howe today on KXNO, Brandon Wegher is looking really, really, really good. I think he used 3 really's. So look for Wegher to possibly be the guy going into the fall

I heard that and Rob usually has very solid Insider info.

I'm in the Wegher camp. A pounding style of runner who took a beating last year but stayed healthy and had a solid year.

He has to be No. 1 with the Injury Twins battling for No. 2.

I am anxious to see Wegher with one year under Doyle, he will be a bit faster and definitely stronger. Both did a great job of ball protection. I think Wegher played slow sometimes just to protect the ball but that is only an opinion. I know from HS clips he has a good burst and I think that will become more apparent as he matures and gets more confidence. Love all three of the RB.s makes it nice from a depth standpoint and for the guys themselves, it gives them a better pro shot since they aren't so beat up from a lot of carries.

THIS. He was only a freshman, A-Rob had a year in the system. BW will be a different (in a good way) player this year.
