9-9 in conf for Iowa "virtual lock"

I wouldnt call anything a lock. Stupid writers need to fill space.

the hawks could have a couple bad shooting and ball handling games against poor teams and lose.

Who else would you include as marquee besides Michigan and Indiana?

I would have to think that the game tomorrow at Ohio State would be a huge win on Iowa's resume. Add to that a strong finish since the end of the schedule is relative weak.

I've been following along with Jon's prediction (linked below) of 20 wins and so far, Iowa has the record he's predicted. I believe he mentioned that, after PSU's best player got hurt he was going to change the game at PSU to a win, which would give Iowa 21 wins, not counting the B1G tourney.

I don't necessarily agree, I think one of the 9 wins has to be a marquee win. Wisconsin is as close as Iowa has.

I hear what you are saying but it is hard to believe that the committee would leave a .500 and 20 win Big Ten team out of the tournament. I think a 9-9 record in conference play and 1 win in the BTT gets them into the NCAA tournament.

I think you forget how weak the bubble has been the last few years.

It helps that there are now 68 teams that make the tournament.

I think you forget how weak the bubble has been the last few years.

And it all depends on how weak they are this year.

The Big 12 and Pac 12 are down.
But the MWC could get a bunch of teams in: New Mex, UNLV, Colo St, Wyoming, SDSU

But, you are right, it will come down to how the other Power 6 teams in the middle of the pack look.
Tough to count out a middle of the road B1G esp when comparing it to a B12 or PAC12 team.

I would hesitate to call any 9-9 in conference team "a lock." We really need a signature win. Wisconsin is not it. Ohio State @ their place fills the bill nicely, though.

I believe Iowa made the tourney under Alford with a 7-9 Big Ten record. But think they also won a couple of Big Ten tourney games too. But even back then the Big Ten wasn't as good as it is now.

Yes, back in 2005 the B1G was probably the 3rd or 4th best conf behind the AC, Big East and B12.
Iowa got into the tourney because they reeled off 5 straight wins to end the season - the win over MSU (a Final Four team that year) got them in, and the buzzer beater by Alando Tucker in the semis showed Iowa could play NCAA Tourney level BB.

But the point remains, they needed that marquee win to get in. 7-9 wasn't going to be enough, that MSU win got them to 21 on the year and it was a big resume builder.

My thoughts as well.
If they get that one (tall order) and win those they "should" they'll be in. 9 wins or 10 wins.

Not sure why he thinks that our good FT% means that we will shoot better from 3. Those are two very different skills.

Also, his blog would benefit from some sub-headings to denote transitions to new topics.

It is good to get the recognition this early in the season, and it might provide more motivation for the team. As Stormin says, another marquee win would probably seal the deal. Wisconsin was a borderline marquee win. I think we will beat Illinois at Carver. That might count as a big win, but I don't think Illinois is a top 25 team anyway......

It is very good to get positive recognition. At halftime against Wisconsin, one of the announcers, maybe Jim Jackson, who is fair, mentioned that MSU was lucky to escape with a win at Carver. Sam Vincent, the tool, had nothing to say and, to me, wasn't that complimentary to the Hawks.....

No one from the B1G finished with a 9-9 20-win season or anything close to it, but 2 years ago, Michigan (21 wins), Illinois (20 wins), PSU (19 wins) and MSU (19 wins) all finished 9-9 and all of them got in. MU was an 8 seed, Ill a 9, PSU and MSU were 10 seeds. I realize that it's a different year, but it does make me feel a little better that history is on our side and 8-10 seeds aren't exactly bubble teams.

If Iowa can manage to go 3-2 over its next 5 games, and then just take care of business down the stretch, I think they're a lock. Especially if they can steal one tomorrow (I don't think they'll win, but I do think it's a winnable game).

Yours truly was saying this before the season started and was made fun of by a few know-it-alls on here..except for my buddy VinScorpoGhosto. I don't think it is gonna matter, though, because I think we get to ten wins.
