Man, is this typical of the state? I would think we would have a few more higher ranked kids. Iowa IS wrestling.

This is considered a little bit of a down year for Iowa high school wrestling and we still have 4 of the top 50 wrestling teams in the nation. It is interesting to see that list and not have some of our recent powers on it: ICW, WSR, Don Bosco, Denver Tripoli. I think that's a good sign for wrestling in our state. I think it shows they may have raised the bar.

Thanks. How about success of Denver tripoli, waverly, and don bosco. All state champs in recent years and all within about 20 minutes or so of each other.

Something what 30 years will do! It's got to be more than just hosting a nat'l tourney, it's just not as popular anymore. Sad!

its all about the little kids programs and if there is no one willing to run them there goes your good wrestlers. i blame the parents and schools for not putting money into their wrestling programs

and i really don't think iowa is down they just aren't seen on the national level

He's not talking about hosting an NCAA D1 national tournament. He's saying that many young Iowa wrestlers are being seen at the younger level national tournaments and therefore aren't being ranked.

Pin, I think you are right. For example, the hs teams in Iowa that are consistently ranked nationally wrestle many of the top teams from the Midwest. Keith Young has been at that level in the past when Apple Valley comes down. The Battle of Waterloo could get to that elite level tournament if it gets more out of state teams there. Southeast Polk won the Cheesehead Invitational last weekend, beating 6 other state champion/nationally ranked teams. That's the kind of tournament I'd like to see Battle of Waterloo become.

yes the cheesehead shed some light on iowa high school wrestling. we need to get more schools thinking outside of the box for our young wrestlers

i know there used to be a rule that you could not wrestle in certain tournaments in season outside of iowa so that put a damper on a lot of kids. has that rule changed for individual tourny's?

CR Prairie is ranked 5th in 3A by Predicament behind Linn-Mar and W-SR. Although Linn-Mar just lost to 2A No. 3 Mediapolis 35-32. Assumption and Mepo (only 2 seniors) are pretty good as well in 2A.

So which state do you think has the best hs wrestling overall these days? Where do we stand?

I'd say we stand where we've always been, behind Penn, Ohio, Illinois, and maybe California. The difference now is that the top Penn guys are not all spread out, and the Ohio guys too for that matter. Iowa is fine and will continue to be top 5 every year. With the decrease in schools offering wrestling, Penn State/Ohio States (maybe start adding Michigan with Pritz up there and Illinois with Perry), the titles are going to be a real battle every year.

The school (other than Iowa State) that should be very careful, is Oklahoma State. Sure they got a sweet team now, but the HS wrestling in the state is in massive decline, and it's going to be hard for them to compete if they're not careful.

Just my opinion of course.
