this team is deeper than any i can remember

Iowa actually had 10 players averaging double figure minutes last year through 11 games vs nine thru 11 this year.

That is interesting, but there is a huge difference between this year and last year and I will keep it simple for everyone: Iowa has functional depth; not dysfunctional depth this season.

Were really not that deep. May played his best game in years. McCabe played one of his better games of the year as well. I dont anticipate these 2 to put up these types of performamces on a nightly basis.

There have been many games earlier in the year that opponents have closed the gap on our leads when we took our starters out.

While I agree May isn't going to rack up 7 dimes a night, he's had a couple other games where he's played well offensively. He won't be a major contributor on offense, consistently, but he can play strong defense and offer leadership. That's all that's really expected out of him.

As for McCabe, he put up what, 5-6 points yesterday? To say that's the peak of what he can offer is completely asinine, considering he gave us more than that pretty consistently a year ago. He's been pressing lately, but sooner or later he'll shake out of his shooting slump.

This could be but last year I don't see us winning a game with one starter scoring 7 pts and the other two starters on the bench almost the entire 2nd half.

Also our bench outscored UNI 19 - 5

Keep that thought until the end of January. Then we'll see.

Oh I will superstar, don't you worry...I doubt my mind will change...the benc may get shorter as the season rolls along, but this is the third game Iowa doesn't win without depth.

19 points from the bench is hardly "quality depth".

No, it's not. But keep in mind that while May didn't score much, he helped account for 16 points (1 bucket and 7 assists). Depth doesn't always show itself in the form of points. Iowa had quality depth yesterday in a game where three starters combined for 8 points, 2 assists, 14 rebounds, and 5 turnovers. And 7-2-9-1 were accounted for by White.

To score 80 points when two starters were complete no-shows and a third was well below his average is a sign of solid depth, at least in that particular game.

Maybe because two guys had 53 combined.

Iowa doesn't win this game last year because of the bench.

Here is what you don't understand, Iowa won with Clemmons/Woodbury being nonexistent in the game. Each had foul trouble and didn't do a whole lot to help Iowa win, couple that with White having a game where he played his tail off, but not big numbers.

The fact is, Iowa won a game where the numbers they are used to getting from three guys weren't there, yes Marble/Gesell made up for some of those, but the bench only helped Iowa and did not hurt them. I don't care how many points they scored...May getting 7 assists is like scoring, so add some points to the total because of that contribution. Oglesby is continuing to come in and do his job hitting on 2/4 from 3-land with the two he missed looking like they were going to fall.

Let me reiterate my original point, Iowa would not have won without the bench play no matter how many points they scored.
