Anthony ‘Sapp’ Clemmons’ wild ride to Iowa City

awkward shot, weak left hand

Andre Woolridge didn't have much of a left hand dribble/move either-did just fine. As long as Anthony plays within himself and continues to take care of the ball he will be solid...I still think Mike G. will find his way too-probably better ball-handler overall but not as good at making decisions right now.

why are people questioning me? you asked why he was under the radar, and i told you. it has nothing to do with my opinion.

His shot really isn't that awkward, though. The release is maybe a little low, though certainly not too low to suffice and the release is quick enough with good lift. Plus he makes a good % of them.

besides the fact that he doesnt really jump

besides the fact that he doesnt really jump

If it goes in, I don't care if he's taking granny shots.

Besides, his scoring is all gravy right now. When a guy can dish out 8 assists with just 1 turnover, and then turn around and shut down a team's best guard on defense, I want him running the point.

This is exactly what the team was missing the last 2 years. I loved what Cartwright did for us the last 2 years, he did a great job for us, but he was not good at all on the defensive side of the ball.

These posts make me wish there was a double like. :D

Cartwright was a god send after Fran came on board, Iowa was desperate for a point guard and he transfered here and did a good job. Clemmons has a much higher ceiling though and has challenged one of the top rated recruits Iowa has had in a long time for playing time and position, this speaks volumes to how hard he has worked and impressed the coaches. The most important piece about him playing high school and AAU is the fact that he has played along side some really good basketball players for a long time. I am sure it made the adjustment to playing major college much easier.

24 assists to 2 turnovers since being inserted into the starting lineup. I'm not getting out of hand, I just love PG that dish and protect the ball.

agreed

he's a freshman and will have freshman struggles. I also want to see what his turnovers are like against a B1G team, and/or a team with a quality point who actually plays defense. Luscious isn't exactly Aaron Craft (which is a slam on KL, not on Clemmons).

scoring from him isn't gravy, yet -- niether Marble nor Gesell have asserted themselves on the wing yet, to be a consistent, money scorer, though Marble has shown some flashes and would be the guy you would expect to take over. until there is consistent production off the wing, the point guard on this team needs to provide some scoring. I like how Clemmons has shown some good instincts on penetrating to score or dish, but the outside shot needs to be a consistent part of the picture.

basically, he's like every other player on the roster -- trying to find the offensive consistency. hopefully, the D can keep the team in games once the B1G season starts, though they're still finding their rhythm there as well, picking up rotations and handling screens.

How many PGs take the jump at center? A true PG doesn't need to have jumps. Clemmons is a lock down defender that shares the ball and sees the floor well. If he has to get a hand in someone's face, he can jump high enough to do that.

He was saying that he doesn't jump when he shoots. We all know he can jump, we've seen those great dunks he had at Sexton.

Clemmons has an awkward shot. He pushes the ball out instead of up. It works for him though. It is like calling shawn marion's shot awkward (it is) but it works.

Clemmons is bryce cartwright with defense. Bc was a streaky shooter but I think clemmons will be too. We are seeing his good streak (all shooters are streaky) some are just less streaky. Bc might have turned it over more but I know clemmons will have nights where he turns it over...it is part of the game and he is a frosh. Bc also had less around him to dish to. Therefore he had to force more shots and passes. This could account for a lower shot percentage and more turnovers. The two are very similar offensively. But we have upgraded defensively. I think if you understood how bc made the offense better last yr over marble at the pg then you understand why clemmons makes things better at the pg over gesell. Right now I think gesell is better as a 2 anyway.

It looks awkward but it doesn't really "push out" like you say. He has a pretty long follow through which gets good loft on his shot. Plus the release is fairly quick.

I agree with your assessment of Anthony running the offense over Gesell though. Some guards just get how to control the tempo and the offensive flow has been better with AC at point and MG at 2, however some of that has to be attributed to White sliding to the 4.

Is Sapp's left hand a weakness? So far, I have not noticed a problem going left, but if he is weak, the scouts will be aware of it quickly and he will be exposed in the Big Ten. Hope it is not the case.

this

Woolridge only went right, but he had a much higher level skillset than Clemmons, and could score whenever he wanted.

AC isn't at that level. He's going to have to develop his left.

Anthony hasn't had a problem going left. Against Iowa State he burned loucious and attacked the basket going left drawing a foul. he pulled up off the bounce with his left hand with about 5:00 left and nailed a mid range jumper.

Also his first assist to Woody was off a screen and roll going with his left and he was able to thread the ball between two defenders for the dish.

rather than picking a kids game apart why not just watch the kid develope, the coaches are working on the kids shooting stroke
