Wet Blanket Time

Like many of you, I'm still jacked from last night's game. It was like actual bb being played at a high level by a legitimate B1G team. Some @ CyFan said we played "out of our minds" and I would agree.

Now for the wet blanket. A young team will have peaks and valleys. We just hit a peak. We aren't going to play that way every night. Take a deep breath and temper your expectations. We are still a work in progress.

The valley will come eventually, and hopefully more peaks too! For now I'm just going to enjoy this feeling.

I don't think Iowa played out of their mind. ISU did play sloppy but both teams did because they both played really fast most of the game. ISU hasn't came together as a team as much as CyFan posters think so. Plus they aren't going to admit it either. A guy (an ISU fan) on the 1460 KXNO said the other day before the game that Iowa is less talented (which is debatable) but plays better as a team. I think Iowa proved it last night, although it was only one game and Iowa played at home.

We, as a team, did not play out of our mind(s). That said, we did see some individual performances that were exceptional. Clemmons, White, Basabe and Woodbury brought a will and a poise that we haven't seen for a long time. That said, we did have some guys who underperformed (Marble, May, Gesell). The day will come when this team clicks on all cylinders. March, 2014 seems like a good time to peak...

I think what Fred Bieber has built in Ames with his rolodex team of misfit toys, is a bunch that all thinks they are headed for "the league." Therefore, they are in it for themselves, not the team. It really shows in the way they are playing me-first ball. Jacking up 3's from 24' and playing little to no defense.
Also, I don't know how they got away with cracking wise on the bench and getting in the ref's face after a call. I guess maturity and experience do not always go together.

Even with their poise, Iowa still made quite a few mistakes (quite often players seemed to get a tad overconfident in their abilities and this led to turnovers, this can also be fixed and aggressiveness is a good thing for the most part) that could easily be attributed to youth. Once they are more experienced and making the smart basketball play constantly, this is going to be a good team.

I have to imagine that Fred doesn't have much of an offensive playbook. That team runs a lot of isolation, more that I see from most major level teams (not that I look that closely but still). Last year they had Royce White, so that was fine, this year, they don't. If they keep that up, Iowa State could easily be NIT bound.

Iowa shot 5-20 from 3 I believe, which is exactly playing out of their minds. Iowa could have blown the game open in the first half, if not for 0-8 from 3 and a few stretches of sloppy play and missed transition opportunities. Niang had (if memory serves) 11 of 15 points at one stretch, so the Clowns may want to look at their other "NBA lock" transfers for the reason they lost.

All of the ISU transfers left were they were at for a reason. They weren't starters/ top level performers where they were at. Will be interesting to see if ISU can have success following this formula.

I think you have to cut Marble some slack. He draws a lot of attention which opens things up for other people. The Fr. played well but we will go as far as he and White carry us. and did shut down a guy who score a lot of points for ISU

This. Marble forced him out of position all night and was constantly on the ball. Clyburn is isu's leading scorer and when he started to struggle it had an effect on the rest of their team. And yes I am drinking the Kool-Aid. BUT I CAN QUIT WHENEVER I WANT!

True. If you just see the box score it looks like RDM disappointed. But his defense was exceptional.

May? This is going to probably be a typical May game going forward. His minutes will be limited and he is not going to stuff the stat sheet. May did what you expect him to do. As long as he doesn't turn the ball over or something dumb you are fine with him playing very limited minutes.

Marble and Gesell shot 4/20. There were 12 turnovers.
I think it was a very good game, but there is still room to improve.

Our leading scorer was a whopping 2-10 from the field, and our point guard matched those "red hot" numbers. We shot 46% overall and 25% from 3 pt distance. Hardly ESPN highlight kinda stuff. We gave back a 10 point lead right before halftime.

And by the way, we started 3 Freshmen.

Suck it, Cy. It's gonna be even tougher for you next year.
