Wet Blanket Time

the shooting of 3's is a problem but FT shooting is getting better going 15-18 last night and 17-19 the other night, making it 4 players between 75-79% and 2 over 80% now, with Woodbury at 60% and MCcABES 66.6% on 6-9 attempts
2 point shooting sits at 50.5% from 2 on 201-398
55-189 from 3 for 29.1%

I thought we played our best overall defensive game last night. Yes, there were poor stretches...the end of the first being an obvious one. But from beginning to end the effort and energy was there, for the most part. We were able to limit the impact of ISU's athleticism and they have more explosiveness at just about every position. That can be attributed to good hustle, good help defense and good rotation. Our intensity to start the game and the fact that they weren't able to just out-quick, out-jump and out-drive us was a bit of a surprise to them, I think. It certainly was to me.

If we can continue to move toward consistently being the defensive team from last night, we'll continue to be an improving program.

No way that was our best game. Not even close.
Marble and Gesell shot 4/20. There were 12 turnovers.
I think it was a very good game, but there is still room to improve.

this was by far the best defensive performance of the year by the entire team. Marble was exceptional.

I think the game was more important than meets the eye.

Primarily, three true freshman, and true soph and one JR took two "best shots" from a very experienced ISU team (going on runs), where we could have folded.

We didn't, and not only that, gave them the "is that the best ya got?" and pulled away to win.

That in itself speaks volumes.

don't forget ISU is a top 10 team in rebounding at 45 pg. and Iowa out rebounded them by 1 32-31.
the are avg'ing over 81 ppg and scored just 71 pts. all on all a pretty good defensive performance.

I have to imagine that Fred doesn't have much of an offensive playbook. That team runs a lot of isolation, more that I see from most major level teams (not that I look that closely but still). Last year they had Royce White, so that was fine, this year, they don't. If they keep that up, Iowa State could easily be NIT bound.

The Big 12 is really down..ISU will have to implode not to finish in the top 4 this season.

It's hard to overstate this. After being conditioned in the Alford/Lickliter school of basketball 'optimism,' I really thought the run at the end of the first half was going to undo the Hawks. Instead, they came right back out in the second half an re-established themselves. BIG growing moment.
