Zero defense played last night

Giving up 90+ to a mediocre offensive team in Notre Dame isn't going to get it done and can't rely on shooting so well and scoring 98 in conference.

Love the offensive output but the lack of defense isn't good. Made the Sherminator look like the terminator.

This has been addressed in multiple threads, as well as Jon's write up. This team was running pretty low on energy, playing their fourth game in 6 days (with a pair of OT games), with a plane trip in between the third and fourth games that left them with little sleep and one day to prepare for ND. That's all tonight's performance was; both Woody and Olaseni were less active on defense than usual, which tells me they just didn't have the juice; neither guy is one to get lazy on the court.

People act like perfection should be expected every night out. Iowa just scored 98 points in a winning effort. So it's not going to be enough about just winning now, we're going to see gripes if stylistic levels aren't met?

Woodbury and Olaseni played 26 minutes combined last night. We played a large chunk of the game, especially the second half, with a front line of McCabe, White and Uthoff. That lineup is going to give up points whenever they are in the game, it's just not a good defensive group.

The heavy travel had a huge impact, especially with the bigs. Iowa does not normally leave players open all over the place. A well rested team would have won by double digits.

Maybe I'm just a 1/2 cup full kind of guy. What I saw last night was a team that found yet ANOTHER way to win. If the defensive effort isn't there, then just out shoot and out score them. This is a great sign that Iowa can win games multiple ways.

ND is averaging 84 points a game, so I don't know if mediocre is the word I'd use to describe their offense. Dang good win tonight that's going to look nice on the resume. Not worried about the defense

Notre Dame prides themselves in having an efficient offense, at least they do when they have an experienced team. They just typically play a slower tempo so they don't score a lot of points. They played at a high tempo last night. They are a good offensive team. It happens.

Like the announcers said last night, ND is hoping to run more moving out of the Big East and into the ACC. I didn't think ND tried to slow the tempo at all, they were more than willing to go up and down the court with Iowa.

Hmm sound familiar to another sport a section of Iowa fans have grown accustomed to whining about?

I don't think the defense was great - however ND was really really good on offense - they moved the ball almost to perfection and hit the shots.

Sometimes there isn't much you can do.

Also how any one could say Notre Dame is a "poor" or "mediocre" offensive team wasn't watching the same game I was watching.

They had complete poise until the last pass.

Unbelievable! How is it the least bit bad if Fran decided he likes his chances in a rapid fire scoring sprint? He has an incredibly deep team that does the transition thing very well. Also, he may have made an educated guess that, this being a home game, we'd get every ounce of noise from our crowd that we can possibly get. After 3 games in the Bahamas where we could have used the home crowd we certainly weren't going to waste it against a team like Notre Dame. Top 20 pre-season ranking based on their prolific scoring especially from long range---that's a description of a team that might drop 90 on you.

I swear, if it isn't one thing it's another. I don't notice any complaints about how passive White was or how Marble took too many shots. I wonder why?

Agreed.

+1. That didn't exactly look like a "mediocre" offense that we faced last night..

Yeah, I'd like to see fewer than 93 points given up, but the good news is that team defense is coachable, and I'm pleased to see our offense looking good. Our outside shooting in particular. 3 point shooting was my #1 concern coming into this year, and if this team continues to shoot the ball the way it's been, it's going to be an excellent season.

you act like you've never heard this song and dance before. OP started a new thread to troll in, its become way to common on this site lately.

Not true... Sherman scored the majority of his points against Woodbury and Olaseni... Technically, he only scored 11 of his 29 points in the 2nd half and even then I bet half of those were against AW and GO... Just saying.

ND plays their offense perfectly. They'll score a lot of points this year or at the very least they'll be rather efficient this year. If they figure out their defense they'll win a lot of games in the ACC, which is good because we need them to be a good team.

Plus, when teams are shooting 50% on field goals doesn't mean bad defense... We had more than a few go down against solid defense.

Man, you just got pwnd in this thread. How's it feel?

The only thing I'm really concerned about after last night is having trouble with talented bigs down low. I know our bigs were tired from the trip, but they got exposed last night. That ND guy did whatever he wanted last night. I don't think we'll play post defense that bad again this season, but if we do then it could get ugly. Niang worries me... he good.
