YouTube vs. Disney/ESPN Pissing Match

Every SEC game this weekend is on a Disney-owned network. I'm sure they'll work it out before 11AM tomorrow, but if they don't there's going to be rioting in the streets.

Luckily all B1G games this week are on either CBS, NBC, or a Fox-owned network.

I did kinda want to watch Texas/Vandy and OK/TN. Oh well.

Everyone on reddit says you can catch most CFB games on regular youtube nowadays (illegal streams). Or sail the high seas.
Those are all illegal streams from someone's home computer and they get bounced off all the time. Takes a while to find one to begin with, then 7 minutes later YouTube suspends the account, then you spend 10 minutes looking for another illegal stream and 14 minutes later that stream gets suspended, and so on ad nauseum.

There is a way to get Disney for $5.99 a month/No Ads

Cancel your Peacock acct online immediately

And they will offer a 6 month deal for $5.99 a month

Worked immediately

Gonna pay Apple TV for another month to watch Down Cemetery Road with Emma Thompson

Then cancel for a while

It's All Good, Lads

Yeah, both Peacock and Paramount will give you a year for $60 if you try to cancel. Decent if you like enough of their stuff. All the Star Trek series on Paramount+, for example. Apple just launched an AppleTV+ and Peacock bundle as another option.

I know we're all college football junkies, but with MNF including the Cowboys (which I don't care about) coming up tonight, is one side going to cave or will Disney dig in and try to make it "hurt?"

It's pretty clear that at least this time Disney is the bad guy, but I'm glad this is happening. I think people are sending a message to Disney/ESPN that there's a cap on the amount of money they'll spend. I know a ton of folks who've said if their team isn't on YouTubeTV they'll just either go to a bar or not watch.

I know if the B1G was part of this mess I'd just listen to Pat and Dolph on the radio blowing leaves or doing some kind of work outside.

And you know what, that would probably be more fun anyway. It'd bring some nostalgia back into my life.

I am going to keep it for 6 months then cancel

Should get all/most of the basketball games

The Final Four is April 4/6 this season

I will get Peacock for all the Hawk football/basketball games they carry and
only pay $36 total

Not exactly like winning PowerBall buy close enough

The problem is....ESPN is a shit corporation to buy and will be a boat anchor for Disney or just about anyone who has boards and shareholders who worship the balance sheet.
ESPN has never...and never will....make "good" profits. They're always going to look terrible on a balance sheet.

Sports is too damn expensive. The foundation of pro sports these days is to increase the value of your property. That's why the Rams move back to LA. It quadrupled their value overnight. And this is from a position in which the previous owner's descendants could not afford the taxes to even inherit the team so they had to sell. And on top of that NFL teams aren't exactly a profit machine. Their actual earnings are TERRIBLE when you consider their revenue. Especially when you factor in that they have to eventually spend large portions of what little they do net every 15 years on new stadiums (or rehabs)....to maintain the value. This is what happens now that they've graduated past their ponzi scheme beginnings. Which you can clearly see in the WNBA and MSL right now. Why would you spend brazillions to buy a franchise? Because you hope that someday, it'll be worth trazillions. And you hope that the share of brazillions you get when new people buy expansion franchises that it's enough to get you there and eventually you wind up like Jerry Jones. Or even a fraction of Jerry Jones is nice.

And a vast bulk of the cash you use comes from TV deals. Which means teams have to extract a ton of money from someone like ESPN. So ESPN winds up with a bottom line on the P&L that's as meager as an NFL team.

But Disney ain't gonna have any of that. For years, a huge chunk of your cable bill went to ESPN. It cost your cable provider about 2 or 3 times as much offer ESPN than it did even HBO. When HBO was considered "premium". But ESPN was always considered "basic" because cable companies knew they needed it to maintain customers.

At this point, I'd just like the NFL to buy ESPN. The NFL, at least, understands that getting as many eyeballs as possible is what will make them the most money and more importantly, increase their value. NFL Films, LLC gets ~$50 million in revenue a year. Not sure what that translates into in terms of profit. $5 million? $10 That's not even two commercials during the Super Bowl. But, the NFL isn't looking at NFL Films specifically as a revenue source. They look at it's non monetary value.

If you're dumb enough (Disney) to look at ESPN as a revenue source....you're never going to be happy.
On the flip side, if you're a carrier (cable/streaming aggregate), you gotta know that ABC is going to go all Discovery/HBO soon and merge Disney+/Hulu/ESPN into one. They're just chickenshit because they are afraid to dilute what they think of as the iconic Disney brand. And the ESPN brand, too....for that matter. They're all chasing Netflix. Youttube TV (as much as I love multi-view)..it's days are numbered. Because they don't own the content. Or the delivery. Just the packaging. And content owners will catch up on the packaging.

ABC was smart to fold in to Disney et. al. Sorry CBS, but Paramount ain't no Disney. And Peacock? No clue what you're trying to do. Pipsqueaks.

I think we're just looking at skirmishes now. I don't think there's mutually assured destruction here. I think there's just destruction coming. Some are going to win. Others won't. Not only are the biggest media conglomerates involved, but so are Google and Amazon. I mean, this is gonna be crazy.

I wish everything would go a la carte but it won't. If it did, content would damn sure get better because the stuff that doesn't have demand will die off. I pay for YTTV for one thing and one thing only and that's sports. During football season I watch college football from 11:00 to midnight, once that season's over I can go months without turning it on. I watch college basketball but it's becoming less and less, if McCollum cranks out decent basketball I'll follow closer. I don't really even watch baseball on YTTV because I have to subscribe to MLB.tv since that's the only way I can see the Braves. NFL I haven't watched a full game in years, even the Super Bowl. The only way I tune into NFL is if there are some Hawks playing to see how that goes. Don't watch women's basketball or any other ancillary sports. Maybe some golf once in a while but if I didn't already have YTTV I wouldn't.

So basically I watch MLB on a separate subscription, Hawks wrestling which is only the partial season because I'm too cheap for BTN+, and college football. Every other channel/content feed is wasted on me. If you said I could have sports channels and programming only for $50 a month I'd be as happy as could be.

I think I am out if I have to pay 30 bucks a month for the ESPN app. I can afford it I just don’t want to do it. I enjoy watching SEC football games, but not 400 bucks-a-year type enjoyment.

Of course YouTube/Disney will come to an agreement then YouTube will jack up their rates.:(

If they take $30 off my YTTV bill, I'll pay $30/month.
I'm guessing ESPN's portion of my YTTV bill is closer to $35/month.

Disney's problem is...

I ain't paying $75 for Disney/Hulu/ABC....which is what they're gonna want.

I keep YTTV for 2 reasons.

1 multiview. Specifically during college football season.
2. To make life easier. I don't have to donate to STL Public Television (it sucks so bad compared to IPTV) just so I can watch Masterpiece. I gotta have my Masterpiece. Also, there's zombie shows. I don't wanna subscribe to AMC+, HBO (for Discovery content), Peacock for the Bravo crap my wife watches, and Big 10 Network. I don't want to manage and bounce between fortyleven apps. At the moment, I'm willing to pay to do that. Also, my wife gets her local broadcast commercial channels.

I used to keep a spreadsheet that covered everything my household was watching and how much it cost for cable...vs. subscribing to all the different apps with/without YTTV, Hulu Live, Philo that I would need to cover those things. For years, it was Big 10 Network that was the clincher. Just too much money (even for just 3 months) that made cable cheaper, until it wasn't. And when I pulled the YTTV and some other stuff lever, I kept Big 10, but I lost Cardinals and Blues games. And History Channel. Fortunately, the Cardinals and Blues have sucked since I did that.

I now have that spreadsheet fired up again, because I know I'm paying twice for Discovery content as I actually do have HBO. I have it for HBO.....not Discovery.

What I want do design is an app of some sort that automatically cancels any streaming service that I haven't accessed in 3 weeks. Automatically cancel it at the end of the month. And then automatically signs me up if I click "accept" on a popup that says "are you sure you want to re-subscribe to Peacock in order to watch Below Deck?"

It shouldn't be this hard to figure out how to spend $160/month (plus data).

Does everyone remember when BTN launched a couple decades ago and the cable companies would not pick it up because of the carrying charge? I ended up getting DTV for a year until Cox finally agreed to terms. We are a society of sports and TV junkies.
