Young Wide Receiver Question Answered

Reading tweets from somebody transcribing Kirk's call in show. Kirk said that Fleming and Smith will be redshirted. Guess that answers that question.

Can Kirk redshirt himself?....maybe come back next spring better and more experienced. After all, the receivers are doing a wonderful job.

I don't get it
We could use some help in WR game and the return game.........It seems like coach has "given up" on the season. I don't understand why we do things like this

Wait, KF is a jurk cause he wont give up on this obviously wasted season and play the backup qb and hes also a jurk cause hes given up on the season by not playing young players.

Not surprising, however I remember Hawkeyegamefilm talking about Tevaun Smith in the open practices saying how he doesn't know how this kid doesn't play this year. It's not just young players not playing, I haven't even seen Staggs. Maybe the young guys aren't ready in terms of blocking down field and ball security, which would mean these receivers really are the best we have right now.

yeah it's hard to imagine how are true freshman who didn't play a snap it wide receiver in high school isn't on the field yet

Probably trying to put some weight on them and get them more familiar with the offense. None of the other WR's seem to get what's going on with the new system so you can't blame true freshman for not being ready.

Putting weight on WR's is so dumb. And soooo very Iowa.
Learning a system?? LOL. If these guys can't run 4 or 5 routes with some precision by this point, they never will.
I'm pretty sure I could line up and practice 5 routes over a 6-8 week period and run them precisely. I may be slow as hell but I'd run it correctly. People act like this is sooooo confusing. If the freshmen aren't playing, it says only one thing...they are not very good & certainly not better than whats in front of them.

Yes its a factor but that didn't keep Clinton Solomon off the field as a true freshman.

I get that people are "searching" for answers but the freshmen aren't playing because they aren't very good. Its really that simple. It is LOL funny that people think that putting in Fleming or Smith is suddenly going to transform this offense like we're adding Randy Moss and Jerry Rice to the lineup. The talent on this Iowa roster is the worst it has been since 1999 & it won't be any better next season, probably worse. While its new that Iowa has all these commits already for next season, and everyone is excited about that, there isn't one skill guy from that group that is going to contribute right away. Realistically, Iowa is looking at a minimum of 2 more maybe 3 more blah years.

Greg Davis's "offense" gives the WR multiple routes to run on each play, and they have to read the defense correctly to choose the correct route. Not as easy as you're making it out to be.

Not as easy as you're making it out to be.

I agree with this 100% and at times even reading the defense isn't enough to run the route correctly. Often you change the depth of your break or even the angle of the route(flattening out a corner route etc) based on dynamic keys. Finding holes in the zone coverage is one of those things that takes time to learn as well.

That said I really hoped we'd see Tevaun Smith this year. Raw tools are definitely there. He's a guy with excellent speed, good size, and some solid ball skills. He flashed the ability to create a lot separation on vertical routes in the open practices. I'm guessing learning the system is the reason they're looking at red-shirting him. As far as Fleming goes I had hoped he'd become a significant threat in the screen game and short passing game. He has some short area burst that most others lack, even being only 11 or so months off an ACL. Again I'd guess consistency with the playbook is probably why they're looking to red-shirt.

Look, I think we are all hoping that somewhere on the roster there is someone who can provide a spark to light a fire on this team. Some of us were hoping the younger WRs were the answer. Apparently they aren't. My only hope now is that these young guys aren't light years behind the current starters because this could be the beginning of a very long and disappointing rebuild if they are.

Jesus H. Christ on a popsicle stick...we have a senior QB and junior and sophomore wideouts, with playing experience, who haven't figured out this new offense yet and some of you are heading for the cliffs of dover because the freshmen "must suck"?

It's a 12 (and hopefully a 13) game season with a new offensive coordinator, let's give it some time before we jump. Were most of us guilty of drinking the black and gold Kool-Aid, thinking this offense was going to hit the ground running? Absolutely! But now we're just as quick to drink the Kool-Aid that gets people ready for the imaginary spaceships and announces the death of the program!?!? Holy crap, we freakin' LOVE our Kool-Aid here!

I'd tell everyone to calm down and take a deep breath, but then I'd be labeled a "Kool-Aid Drinker"...speaking of which, anyone got a packet of Cherry? I'm all out...

Agree 100% -- Iowa recruiting class for 2013 appears to include more "project" recruits at WR

Whoa. It's not often Shane gets ******. The last two weeks have been very frustrating. I think it's easy to jump to far fetched conclusions when things go south.
