You want purer basketball then call hacks as fouls and make them play position defens

Re: You want purer basketball then call hacks as fouls and make them play position de

We're a violent society. I think the physical changes in the way the game of basketball is officiated is a reflection on that fact.

Are you trying to say US society is more violent now than in the 50' , 60's and 70's. !!!!! really you really believe that.

It only seems more violent because of much more TV and the violence in shows and movies as well as 24 hour news coverage. Maybe you dont remember lynchings and the much more racial violence of the 50s-70s as well as all the rioting in cities etc

Basketball have more physical contact because the people that oversee it let it happen.

UI was going to say it...thx. No way are we as violent.

We are more wiling in some ways to do what it takes to win. All grew up getting ribbons for everything.

more seriously though one of the things that has changed on the high school game and moves on to college is the physical strength. A defensive player can now have an elbow bent and push into the offense player really hard with no way to really detect it without seeing it from different angles. Makes a huge difference on dribbling, shooting and passing. And it is so hard to detect.

I wish they'd go back to the old charging rules as well.

I am not sure society today isn't less violent. There are a lot of things that continue to be ignored today. People still believe there is a war on drugs, but I don't believe that. The gangs in today's society are largely ignored except in the local areas. Also, people seem to want to believe that the mob still isn't as significant as it once was.
Things have changed from those times, but I don't believe this society is less violent and maybe a bit more violent due to the ignorance of perception. Violence has changed, but not for the better. It wasn't even a decade ago that a guy in Texas, I believe, was dragged behind a pickup truck and a trail of body parts was left.
Just my 2 cents

Good points. What is different is everyone has a camera now.

Yeah, but even so, I think violence has just changed, it is more extreme in ways...mass shootings, the murder-suicides. In Toledo, OH just a couple of months ago and Grandmother/Grandfather took their grandchildren out of school and locked everyone up in the car in a closed garage and let the car run...all because of a custody battle. Now that doesn't seem "violent" but that is the kind of things that have been happening more and more of late.

In the town I live in Blissfield, MI a guy this past Summer got in an argument and killed his g/f, her sister and tried to kill their mom as well by shooting...he ends up killing himself in WV...Blissfield hadn't had a murder in forever and what made it worse was the sister was 8 months pregnant. This type of violence is most certainly on the rise. Things that people want to think are more isolated, aren't isolated any longer and I think the media fascination with Columbine was one of the worst things to ever happen to glamorize violence on TV.

Yes, I definitely agree that we hear a lot more about weird social and family oriented violence. The drug violence of the 60-70s was more hidden than drug violence now which can be anywhere.

And when the only media was your local newspaper and several TV stations that had news for 1 hour a day you just didnt hear of alot of violence then like you do now.

Now, you can keep getting updated by google, msn, and yahoo news thru out the day and even search for violent acts if you want, that is crazy man.

Re: You want purer basketball then call hacks as fouls and make them play position de

Perhaps ladies basketball is a game more apt to your sensibilities, because your quarrels are not with the officials, but rather human physiology. The basketball court has maintained identical dimensions since the 1970's, yet the players are significantly larger juxtaposed to athletes from 40 years past. Additionally, contemporary athletes, on the average, posses considerably more strength and speed than their fore bearers. That the game is more physical is not a symptom of poor officiating, but rather the logical aftermath of adding more matter and energy into a closed system.
Hand checking is hand checking, ghost. Making the court bigger? Is that what you propose as a solution?

That is an interesting point, so with all the advantages of being able to find information and knowing information has society always just been this bat crap crazy and people are now just really figuring it out?

I did not proffer a solution because I do not believe we are in a situation that needs amendment.
