Yes I'm spoiled!

I hate watching Hawks place second last year and NOW third! We once had the David Taylor's, Frankie and Ruth's of the wrestling world! Let's get back to winning titles ASAP. And yes I'm a spoiled Hawkeye fan.

Looks to me like we benefited quite a bit from having those Va Tech transfers.

I know that is heresy on these boards to say, but it was almost like we got 2 recruiting classes for the price of one.

Name one of those recruits that wouldn't have come to Iowa if Brands was already there.

I can't and neither can you...its impossible to know.

I can tell you though that none of our recent recruiting classes have come close to bringing in the kind of talent we had from the combination of the Va Tech transfers and the Iowa class already in place when Brands was hired.

National title contender. Was hoping for big years out of Carew and Byers, which just happen to be the two holes in our lineup.

oh yeah, impossible to know. if Brands were at iowa at the time recruiting them there I'm sure they would've passed because they fell in love with the Virginia Tech campus. They probably wouldn't have even returned his calls.

Better question is how does Brands fix this!? Because Minnesota & PSU are going to be just as good, if not better than us for the next 3-5 years. Lets not forget OSU and that young team too! Is the years of dominating over or we content on having a nice roster that can compete with, dare I say the best aka Penn St?

IMO, Cael was able to get the two great classes (Altons, Ruth, Taylor, etc) on the "lets get Iowa" vibe. Iowa has been able to get a room full of studs to buy into the steel sharpens steel philosophy. Now that the shine on this "powerhouse" is off, will he be able to get studs to sacrifice for the good of the team. I don't think he can, as he will have to spread his classes out rather than have one great one.

The days of Iowa dominating are over, but the championships are not.

Doesn't dominating = championships? Just don't want the tides to shift to PSU. First Okie St then on to Iowa and now PSU?

I think he meant dominating like winning championship after championship. With the rise of Minny to the north and PSU (and OSU for that matter) to the east, it's going to be hard for one team to dominate the country. I would guess the sport will take more of a cyclical nature.

You new to Iowa wrestling or something? You know what I meant, winning championships by large margins. The parity is there now that Ohio State and Penn State are coming along, plus the 9.9 scholarships.

These things go in cycles: Ok St, Minnesota, now PSU. Iowa has always come back for multiple championships each time, no reason to think they won't this time. The thing is Gable has so many of his wrestlers that are now coaches, that preach his teachings, that this was bound to happen.

The VaTech recruiting class WAS his Iowa recruiting class.
That whole VaTech line of talk is idiotic.
It's like saying PSU wouldn't be dominant the last 2 years without the transfers Cael got. It's stupid. In wrestling, more than other sports... athletes commit to a coach.

Brands' class next year is pretty friggin' sweet. Whenever you have a bunch of guys graduate (Metcalf, Borschel, Morningstar, Beatty, Keddy) you are going to take a hit.

Watch and see what happens with OkSt next year. They will take it on the chin.

And when Ruth, Taylor and the Altons are gone PSU will drop like a rock. They lose Wade and Molinaro this year which will hurt plenty.

We have populated the wrestling world with our coaches, wrestlers and philosophy... you can kind of equate it to what happened with UCLA basketball... people know who you are and how to beat you. It's a little harder now. That's fine. We are complaining about a team that's regularly top 3 in the Nation. I want wins more than anyone, but you have to have some perspective.

MN won 3 of 4 years and looked like they were the new top dog. How have they done since then? How many titles has OkSt won - 35... how many since 1979... maybe 6? They are way down from where they used to be. It's hard to stay on top - hell, OkieSt didn't even win the B12 this year. I wouldn't write the Hawks off. We are tough even when "down." I predict PSU drops like MN did to very good but not dominant in a couple years.

The only thing I find interesting about this is the fans....if you showed up on the football board about a year or so ago, everyone would have been happy to tell you how much better TB was than KF.....now here we are. Ups and down with every coach and every program...it sucks, but it is what it is. I was thinking about this while watching the Big 10's and then I pop onto the site for the first time in a long time and here we are.....
