Wrestler has Lisfranc injury

I have a son who is getting ready to start his 2nd year varsity wrestling. He injured his foot during wrestling camp a couple weeks ago. Specialist says he has what she calls a Lisfranc injury and she has scheduled surgery for tomorrow. I have got alot of different views on the estimated recovery time for this sort of injury. I was wondering if anyone has any idea on this. Season starts end of October. Cast will be off and pins out. I understand there will be physical therapy, but I am woried his season will be shot. Any ideas?

Same injury Chad Beatty endured last year. He needs to have follow the Surgeon's orders exactly and also needs extensive physical therapy. When he is cleared, pool work and riding bike are good alternative workouts. Strengthening the muscles in the foot will help with recovery also.

Bluejaymom--my wife works with injured athletes. I will try to see if I can gather some information from her. Good advice from above to follow the doctors orders.

SPGroth, that would be awesome. He is fearing his season is going to be jeopardized. I am hoping not. He is looking for a state win this year and working toward a scholarship. Anything we can do to get the fastest recovery is going to be essential. Thanks

Also just read Chad Beatty's story...wow! That was a great motivational story for my son to know it can be done, determination and will power it will happen!

he can work through it jesse sundell broke his leg junior summer and came back to win his 4th state title

Bluejaymom--here is some information:
This can be an unpredictable injury when it comes to return to sport but usually a quicker return with surgical intervention, assuming no complications resulting from the surgery itself. PT depends on surgeon and PT but probably 2-3 week for at least 4-6 weeks once the cast is off. Once the cast is they will be working on range of motion and strengthening of foot and ankle. The more compliant he is with therapy and his home exercise program the better return he will make. I would think he will make it back for at least most of the season, maybe missing the first few weeks of practice. Of course that is a prediction based on a general outcome of an average Lisfranc and an uncomplicated surgery and rehab.

Sounds good. He is very determined to get back on the mat so hoping it goes well. Surgery today 3:30pm. Thanks for the informaton.

MMills88- I talked to his coach to let him know what we were looking at and what we were facing. His idea was to get a second opinion because a broken toe is a broken toe and they don't usually do anything about it and if it were him or his son would have tried to stay away from surgery as much as possible and try just splinting it. I did not even ask him if he thought that he could return for the season, he said "I don't believe he will be back for the season at all and definitely not 100% to keep his varsity position". He was ready to quit because he is frustrated by the trainers taking kids out for simple injuries and benching them. I feel he is frustrated with the fact that he has two great wrestlers benched for a period of time with injuries. He is a good coach but a good one

Good luck with the surgery today. Hope that things go well for your son.

My wife has to deal regularly with having to make a decision on what to do with an injured athlete. First off, I am very happy that high school are using ATC's to help make these decisions. I know, when I was in high school, it was up to the coach/parent to make the call. Now, the young athletes have trained medical folks to help make those decisions. Many of the ATC's are also backed up by doctors (ortho, etc) or PT's.

Yes they are and I am greatful as well. Surgery went great two stitches, pin to big toe and two small toes next to it. Doc says he can return to the mat first week November which is very awesome! As long as follow strict orders. Ever try to keep a 16 year old down?? Not so simple...road to recory has started :)

That is good news. Returning to practice the first week of November, means that he is missing very little. I am sure the ability to keep him down is going to be a challenge. Just express to him that if he wants to return in a timely fashion that he will have to follow his doctors/PT's/Trainer's orders.

Seen Doc today...got stitches out and cast on. Rod will be coming out in 5 weeks a whole month ahead of schedule!! Wow! I am impressed! Coach is blown away! So funny but all is well I am sooo happy for all the information and support. I believe he is going to show us great things this year. I will keep updated! Thanks all

Yeah thats what Doc said...still no weight bearing. He had choice of cast or boot and he took cast cause he says "this foot is gold to me right now so better go cast"
