WR Committ Shepherd opening up recruitment

Rob Howe tweeted that JaCorey Shepherd is opening his recruitment. Doesn't sound like he is a "solid" committment to Iowa right now. Will be interesting to watch this play out....

I wonder if he told Iowa he is going to look around, they told him we will as well.

Maybe this is a sign that Iowa has another WR recruit or two coming in (Arnett?). And we all know how Iowa feels about recruits looking around. If this is true and he's opening it up, I would put my beans in the "not coming to Iowa jar".

You had to expect some ship jumping since recruits are committing earlier and earlier these days. I would rather have them do it now when there is plenty of time to recruit a replacement than two weeks before signing day when you're scrambling.

Exactly. But it probably isn't smart for a WR to leave Iowa when we just picked up a very good QB in his class.

If he has notified the staff that he is opening up his recruitment, I say pull the 'ship and move on. Not that 18 year old kids can't change their mind, but I am pretty sure they are told when they make the choice to be certain that is what they want. If they are not certain they are encouraged to continue to explore and make the decision when they feel comfortable. I hope this means we may have some bigger fish circling, but I was pleased with Shepherd's commit when we got it.

In the KF era, other than Reilly Reiff, I can't think of another player that re-opened their recruitment that the staff didn't immediately cut ties.

Yes they're young and I certainly don't condone attacking these kids when they have second thoughts, BUT I also believe they're told in no uncertain terms not to commit until they're sure about their choice. This is part of growing up, but they need to be prepared to be cut loose as part of the growing up process--I fully support the staff if this is their approach.

As one coach said (Urban Meyer maybe?), when you get a verbal commitment from a kid these days, it means you're in their top 4 or 5. It's the way things are these days. Either way, I have faith we'll be fine.

Not at all what I was getting at, and I am pretty sure you know that. Let's assume you don't. As I stated in my post the staff makes sure this is for sure what the player wants. He has every right to back out and with it being this early in the process I would feel more than confident we can find someone to take that scholarship. If he decides to stay on board, I am more than happy to have him, looks to have a good skill set and build. Decommits happen, as we have benefited from recently (CJ).

I would love for Miller to sign here...he just realized that kansas sucks. You should give him a pat on the back for getting a clue and no longer being a bum.

p.s. Basabe left Siena to come here...does that anger you too?

It was sarcasm. Everyone gets their panties in a bunch and bad mouth a kid when he wants to open his recruitment back up from Iowa, but when we're taking them from another school its all cool and gravy.
