Don't know if they are lethargic from their LONG off period, too young or both but the Hawks looked BAD today and they looked very promising early this year. They are going to get ridden hard by Brands after this tourney. The way they are wrestling is unacceptable... especially DSJ.

People keep talking about the long period off and I don't know that it is any longer then the team normally has off before Midlands. Traditionallly (at any level) Holiday tournaments are where you find wrestlers sluggish, sick, cutting to much weight that was put on over the holidays, or even un-focused. Any of these are solid reasons but I think the time off is the same as in the past.

I just find tonight mind boggling. I really do.
How do you have this kind of result from Iowa wrestlers... freshman or not?
What is GGs excuse? DSJ out of the tourney on day 1.
Ramos getting served.
McD getting beat by Precin? Really? I don't care what anyone says... should never happen.
And our HWTs are just embarrassing right now.

#5 team in the nation? I don't think so... i'm thinking that 11-12 range was about right and i'm eating Crow big time because, going into this tourney I would have said we were probably #3 or #4.

Just shaking my head at this.

I hope Brands can find an answer and get things looking better fast.

We have a bright future I believe, but even this makes me wonder. These guys need to show some fight.

Dude, step back from the ledge, this is a reloading year, Iowa isn't going to win the National Title so get prepared for that now and you won't be let down as much come March.

Also McD isn't superman, Precin is good and he was ranked #2 for a reason. It isn't like he dominated McD.

Yeah, he was ranked #2 because someone has to be. He's not in the same class as McD. Just because he's #2 doesn't mean he's right behind him in talent... he's really not. I don't see the next match being close.

However, the team was bad, just downright bad this weekend.

I'm not on the ledge. I expect better things from the Hawks. I've been a fan for 25 years and listen, we've had plenty of young teams before... they didn't perform this badly at Midlands.

I agree Precin is good but McD won the national tournament last year at a weight that included 2 Defending National Champions. I was talking with my Dad about the team last night before finals and I said that McD needs to do what Metcalf would have done in this situation. Stepped up, took the lead and set the tone. McD has to be the leader. Not questioning him but someone needs to lead this team and it might as well be the defending NC.

McD also won the National Championship without having to face tough competition outside of Long. Escobedo and TNick were upset and the bracket was pretty wide open for him to reach the finals. Precin is easily on McD's level.

I agree with ICAlumni. You can't say this is a reloading year, PSU is as young or has younger wrestlers than us and they are dominating. And to say it's a reloading year doesn't mean that we should see Hawkeye wrestlers with no fight, no conditioning, no strength, wrestling to places 5 spots lower than their seeds. Look at LL, he's been in the program forever, this is his senior year.

Precin is really good, but I don't see McD losing to him again.

I agree with this, and Precin also fininshed 3rd two years ago before redshirting last year.

Precin is just as good as McD because he is better then Long and we all know how Long gave McD fits.

Well PSU is a better team right now. Will they be by March is yet to be seen. I agree there is no excuse about the conditioning and not being aggressive like years past.

So if you don't want to call it a reloading or rebuilding year what do you call it when a team has 8/9 of 10 new starters?

The problem is PSU has young guys who were not only top notch recruits but top notch athletes, the best of the best, Altons, Molinaro, Taylor, Ruth and Wright are all top notch athletes, even Wade at 285 is pretty athletic. Our best guy Mcd is not what i would call an explosive and slick athlete, he is a grinder. Marion is an athlete, Ramos is too but is up too high in weight, DSJ and Ethan Lofthouse are pretty good. The rest of the starters are avg at best. Dziewa, Evans and Telford would bring a lot more raw talent and athletic ability. The Ballwegs, Clark and Nate Moore are all a bit short and not real slick. Gambrall and Luke Lofthouse have very slow feet and wrestle stiff. We need to get a stud for 149 (McCaully would have been nice) and 197 (we have no one). We need to get guys who are both hard working and athletic.
