Would you take a first round BTT loss if it meant winning the first round of NCAAs?

Re: Would you take a first round BTT loss if it meant winning the first round of NCAA

Do we really need a new thread for this? This has to be one of the dumbest hypothetical questions I've ever seen posted here.
While I agree with your sentiment, it's still harsh. That's what boards and fans do on sites like this: discuss hypotheticals.

So here are my hypotheticals:

1. I don't want this either/or. I want both.

2. I want to win the Big Ten Conference (not since 1979).

3. I want to win the Big Ten Tournament (7 of 9 first game bow outs is ridiculous).

4a. I want to make the NCAAs 3 of 4 years.

b. Go to the Sweet 16 1/2 of that time.

c. Make the Final Four 1-2 times a decade. Iowa in the Final Four once-in-a-lifetime isn't cutting it. Big10 Conference Championships once-in-a-lifetime is ridiculous.

d. See a NC.

5. I would take 3 years of Rutgers basketball for a National Championship. Wait, Iowa has had three years of Rutgers basketball. So when's the national championship?

Since Final Fours are once-in-a-lifetime thing, then it's not just all about NCAA appearances.

I want the toppings of Conference and Tournament Championships, too.

I haven't reviewed any of the responses to your post as of yet, but please don't take this the wrong way. I think it is a stupid premise since I personally don't believe the extra time off gives a team an advantage in their first NCAA Tournament game. The two are not mutually exclusive.

The only reason to ask this question is to try to find some silver lining in a loss to a team that basically doesn't know how to win but beat us on a neutral court where we typically have a lot of fans, making it a little less neutral and a little bit of a home court advantage for us in a way.

Too bad we blew a golden opportunity to pick up two wins by blowing the first game. Still, this will go by the wayside if we garner the six seed some thing we might be able to snare and we win the first NCAA Tournament game and Hopefully the second.

Wow another comment with the word "stupid" or "dumb" in it. Some of you are on a roll. I guess I would rather take in NCAA win than a BTT win (of course we would take both if we could). That was the progression goal anyway this year.

The point of the post is I think we will feel much better getting the NCAA win (if we do) then if we would have beat Penn St and advanced in the BTT(with likely going no farther than Wisky) and then going out early in the first game of the NCAAs. See Northwestern St for example. So, I just hope we got the ugly out of the way today.

I guess if it would make you feel better I could have called it a flawed premise instead of a stupid premise. Am I going to get called on the carpet for saying it is silly to try to make yourself feel good about losing to a team that could only manage four wins in the conference season?

It is obviously not the end of the world. But we were a tie breaker away from the four seed in this tourney and instead we lost to a bad team because our talent still can't figure out how to win a game they SHOULD win. No matter how many close losses they had, that game should have been a PSU loss because they just aren't a very good team.

So try to make yourself feel good all you want. I'm just saying.

Yes, losing to PSU sucks bad. I don't get it either. But, I guess, that is why 7-10 seeds can do.

My sentiments exactly! I want to be like Wisconsin. Heck, I'm an old fart. I remember when we were like Wisconsin. Ralph won the conference two of his last three years. Lute finished second of better four of his last five years. The other year year the Hawks finished fourth & went to Indianapolis.

Since Lute left, the Hawks have seriously challenged for the Big Ten Championship only twice. Davis' first team & once under Alford. That's twice in over thirty seasons. My Dad knew a group of people that used to rent a bus & go to Madison every year. Know why? That is the only way they could get tickets to see the Hawks!

I was never an Alford fan, but at least he one something!

Yes, it would make up for it. But if they lose in the first round, we now go into next season with less talent and a coach who has proven that he can't win tournament games, which are really the only things you play in the postseason. Just win so we don't have that hanging over the program's head.

Re: Would you take a first round BTT loss if it meant winning the first round of NCAA

Iowa has been bad historically in the Big Ten tournament. I think they have only made it to Saturday twice. That is terrible.

I am concerned about the NCAA tournament game. At this point, I have doubts they will win. They cannot afford yet another poor shooting game. They also need to play like they have the previous 6 games, and not revert to the hang-dog, give up attitude they showed yesterday, and which had been a problem late last season and much of this one.

If they don't win at least one game, then they have taken a step backwards and the season will be considered a disappointment.

Re: Would you take a first round BTT loss if it meant winning the first round of NCAA

I'll take Ralph & Lute any day. Mr. Davis never won anything & never seriously challenged for anything. At least Alford won something!

Won how many NCAA games? Get off the crack!
