Have the basketball team make it to the NCAA tourney OR make a deep run in the NIT(ie play at Madison Square Garden)?? Just a thought that came to me this weekend.

Discuss away.....

I think this was discussed towards the end of last season and the overall consensus was NCAA tourney. Easy question, IMO.

That was discussed last season? I remember the CBI vs. no tournament discussion, but not this one.

It was completely hypothetical. It was at a time when a lot of posters were drinking the kool-aid and there was still an outside shot of possibly making the tourney. I'd dig for it, but no thanks.

NCAA Tourney everytime and its not even close. Pretty stupid question, IMO.

How is it stupid? You have a young team, and experiencing the atmosphere of the NCAA tourney is great, but getting extending practices against a solid skilled teams would be better in my opinion, THIS YEAR. NCAA tourney is likely one and down, go home, season over, no more practices. NCAA's is great to hang your hat on, but will it make our team more better in the long run, instead of a deep run, marquee games, more practices of the NIT.

Why jump all over the question. Why not state some facts that adhere to your vague opinions.

So far everybody in the thread agrees with me.

And quick, name for us the 4 teams that advanced to the NIT Final Four last year. Nobody gives a damn and I would be willing to bet that Fran would much rather go to the NCAA tourney and lose early then win the NIT.

I went to the NIT game at Carver and it was a lot of fun, but it's no substitute for an NCAA bid. A one and done NCAA tournament experience is still better than an NIT Final Four. Additional practices aside, I couldn't even tell you who played in the NIT FF last year.

NCAA. The program needs acknowledged relevance now more than it needs practices and additional games.

I do not think that the bad-bowl-game = more practices in football carries over with an analagous situation in basketball.

Minnesota made it to the finals and are now picked to finish in the top half of the BT, along with being a top 25 team this year, a trip to the NIT did nothing hurt them.
so Icould see either happening, and a trip to Madison Square Garden is a good experience, I would rather see them play than see them stay home,
another thought they should get a better seed, so they would get more home games in the NIT

NIT for sure. The NIT appearance banners at Welsh-Ryan demonstrate the prestige associated with NIT appearances.

Would you rather spend 2 hours with Jennifer Aniston, or the whole weekend with the gal from the local BP? Nobody cares about the NIT except for the fans of the teams of playing in it and even that is suspect. I shudder to think how empty MSG would be if Iowa locked up with K-State for the NIT title. Sadly, I would be riveted to my TV set and consider taking the day off work to tailgate.

The girl that works at my local BP is pretty nice on the eyes actually, and Jennifer Anniston is a head case so...

This depends a little on who you are. As fans obviously it is the ncaa tourney (more prestige). As the business man barta...probably the nit as you can host and collect more money (being that we would be a higher seed in the nit). As a coach I think it might depend on what you think would benefit the team more. If I were fran I would go with the tourney because you see upsets all the time and sometimes the cinderella goes pretty deep. But you can't be cindrella if you aren't at the ball. So outside of barta I think it is ncaa tourney. And maybe even to barta it is too.

Since it's been so long since Iowa has been to the NCAAs, I think I would want to make the tournament. However, there is something to be said for making a deep NIT run, especially for a young team. Last year, Minnesota made a run to the title game; this year they're 10-1 with only a loss to undefeated Duke. Two years ago, Wichita State won the NIT; last year, they went 27-5 with only two regulation losses during the regular season. Also in 2011, Alabama went to the NIT title game; last year they made the NCAAs for the first time in 6 years. For exposure, playing multiple nationally televised games that are the only college games on TV would probably be better than playing a 1 PM game on Thursday at the same time as 3 other games.

All that being said, I think I would still take the NCAA tournament.
