Would this be an example of a good timeout?

Around the 2:30 mark, with Jok on the bench, Ohio St scores cutting the lead to 62-61. An Ohio St run of at least 5 straight.

Fran has 3 timeouts in his pocket. Call one and set up a play for Jok who was clearly more aggressive than Uthoff at that point? Instead Mike tries scoring down low on a drive if my memory serves me. Unsuccessful.

And I believe the very next possession was the controversial non 3 pt shot by Williams.

2 points in last 4:07 of game and Fran blamed the loss on defense and rebounding. Huh?? Nice smokescreen.

I would love for Fran to excel in close games but unfortunately the record shows otherwise. 3-6 in games decided by 6 pts or fewer this year. Well under .500 for his career at Iowa.

Oh the best timeout was with 1.2 seconds left and the hawks down by 4. I saw Fran yelling '4 point play' to the team (sarcasm meter high)

Yes, I had to chuckle at that one. Maybe he was drawing up a steal by Uthoff and then getting fouled while draining a 30ft three. Sure, I could see the logic there.

Even the officials tried to help us by not calling Williams shot a 3 (it clearly was) and taking the air out of the game with that long delay.

But taking a timeout when the other team has all the momentum and the crowd is into it is basic coaching. IIRC they had all 3 available at the time.

Yes. We had 3 timeouts available. Jok was on the bench. They pulled within one. Fran could have taken a timeout and got Jok back in the game with a "coherent" play. Who knows? Maybe Jok hits a 3 and we go up 4?? Instead an unsuccessful drive to the rim by Mike IIRC.

The bigger point is Fran acknowledges that he prefers to let them play on. BUT, Fran has an awful record in close games. 17-37 (31%) at Iowa. 3-6 this year. His philosphy isn't working. This isn't the players guys. Incoherent substitution patterns and poor game management etc etc.

Fran looks unsure/confused/distracted at times IMO.
This isn't anything new to me. I have been saying this for a few years. For all of his basketball IQ, he is not a coach that closes.

Here is another example of Fran's bench coaching style that really turns me off.

When a player on the court messes up he will walk down the bench screaming at the bench players. Is it his style of motivating? Or just his own way of venting to feel better? Wagner gave him a look yesterday that was kind of priceless actually. I have seen that look from other players several times over the past few years.

How many coaches do you see do that? Contrast that with Tom Davis who would instruct without screaming constantly.

I believe his temper contributes to his poor closing record in games. He either seems out of control or strangely detached. Never seems to be much middle ground.

When things start going south I think he would be a difficult coach to play for. That will fatigue you quickly. Not to mention make you tighter than a drum.

It certainly isn't his strong suit and it's been talked about for years. Fran IMO as a result is losing his team. With the game on the line what better motivation to have a coach call Timeout and look each player in the eye and coach them and settle them in. That's my greatest disappointment with Fran is I guess he feels his teams don't need that, but they do.

I find it pretty sad that fans blaming Uthoff and saying he don't want it, I think that's ********!! I see a system that takes certain players out of the game, especially late in the game. I see a PG that is struggling with ball distribution and keeping players engaged. Also I see a PG that's dribbling himself out of position. I can't tell you how many times I saw that yesterday!

I am usually in favor of letting the kids play, but given the mental makeup of this team you might be better off using your timeouts and setting something up.

Is that the case? Or is it guys are not moving without basketball in their hands?

I don't like to blame players but I am growing tired of everyone blaming Gesell. He played a good game yesterday and with the game on the line the last three minutes all Uthoff did was pass the ball instead of attacking the rim. I grew tired of White going to the basket last year and throwing his hands up trying to draw a foul but I think Uthoff needs to do that more. Instead Iowa gives the ball back to Gesell with the shot clock running down and hopes he can get to the rim.

It very well could be. But personally it Happens IMO far to often to think that be the case trj. Fran really loves to go with the isolation in close games or games we lead late. We used to call it heroball.. I find it to be one of the most inefficient plays in Basketball to be honest with you

My idea of a good time out would've been to take the starters and staff, put them in the locker room w/out any supper....;)

Jok was wide open for a 3 late and passed on it...said he was still feeling sick and had been short all day. I can't remember if it was before or after the 2:30 mark but it would have been a difference maker. So I don't think there's a strong argument for getting Jok in the game or getting him the ball late in this one.

Are you kidding me?? Fran DID put Jok in the game at the next dead ball I believe (controversial non 3pt shot?) but we had already whiffed on the previous possession.

So are you saying Fran should have kept Uhl in the game and passed on Jok? A little controversial for you Wind. Just say it. Fran made a mistake if that's what you believe. It will feel good. ☺

We've loss all of our games in the last 5 minutes and that's unacceptable considering the veterans on the team have been in this situation time and time again.Sooner or later you have to look at the coaches desicions late in the games or at the end of the halfs.

Wisconsin did this very well against us. Stifled momentum and erased a 6 point deficit quickly. That's how you coach. Fran just stands their red faced and pouting while the crowd goes crazy and the team pees down their leg. It's frustrating to watch.
