Would Greg Davis Still Have a Job If We Had Iowa State's Schedule?

Did you see the Mississippi VS. LSU game in which LSU won? LSU has old timey, traditional Iowa-like offense. Not much for passing but LSU's running game is brutal. LSU's defense is brutal as well.

LSU won the game 10-7.

Mississippi showed with its more sophisticated and potent offense that it could get from their 20 yard line into field goal range in less than 1.5 minutes. Probably a case of the dreaded prevent defense LSU was using that last 1.5 minutes which defends nothing.

Today's LSU offense and Iowa's traditional, old timey offense wouldn't have been able to get into field goal range from their 20 yard line in 1.5 minutes or less.

If you get your wish and Iowa reverts to traditional, old timey offense, Iowa won't score a lot of points, won't be able to engineer quick scoring drives, and still have to score loads of points because Iowa's defense isn't all that good. Tell me, how does Iowa win against better teams? Even this: how does Iowa score more than, for example, Maryland if it uses old timey, traditional Iowa offense and has this defense?

Well, ISU finished the season 2-10. Is there any doubt in anyone's mind that if Iowa had ISU's schedule, the best we would have finished is 3-9? What wonders the luck of the scheduling draw can have. Ferentz looks like a "decent" coach this year while Rhodes is on the chopping block, yet Rhodes had the better team. Let's take an objective look and figure out who the Hawks would have beat this year with ISU's schedule:

#1 NDSU - loss
#20 KSU - loss
ISU - loss
#7 Baylor - loss
#21 Oklahoma State - loss
Toledo - win
Texas - loss
#18 Oklahoma - loss
Kansas - win
Texas Tech - loss
West Virginia- loss
#3 TCU - loss

Bottom line, our AD's head is in the sand. He ignores the fact that we had one of the easisest schedules in Iowa football history, failed to beat a team with a winning record, lost to 2-10 ISU, and is not recruiting like even an average Big 10 team. With ISU's schedule and a 2-10 record, there is no doubt that heads would be rolling in Iowa City, but instead, the fat cats remain in their mansions cruising the MAC commitment lists to finish up their recruiting class.
