Would Greg Davis Still Have a Job If We Had Iowa State's Schedule?

In back to back weeks, Iowa State has played:

#1 (fcs) North Dakota State
#20 KSU
Iowa
#7 Baylor
#21 Oklahoma State
Toledo
at Texas
#17 Oklahoma

With that schedule, conservatively speaking, the EXACT SAME players and coaches with the EXACT SAME game plan, who are happily sitting at 5-2 ,would likely be 1-8 or 2-7. This is not a jab at the team, just a fact. Our cupcake schedule is the only reason this team has a winning record.

So assuming we played what the other school in the state of Iowa played, and had a record of 2-7, would Barta step up and take action? Would Kirk bid Davis farewell? If so, the Iowa coaching staff owes its huge, fat paychecks to nothing more than the luck of the draw on scheduling.

Similarly, if lowly Iowa State had our cupcake schedule, would they be sitting at 5-2? It's amazing how perception can change when you get to play Ball State and Indiana instead of Baylor and Kansas State.

This isn't the first season of a cupcake schedule so GD wouldn't be the only one feeling the heat. The Captain would be too.

But I don't think ISU would go 1-8 or 2-7 in an eight game schedule either.
;)

And, no. ISU wouldn't be 5-2 with Iowa's schedule.

Iowa has beaten a few good teams in the last few years. Not many but include the following at least:

Michigan in 2011 finished 11-2 and won the Sugar Bowl finished in the top 10 of the final rankings I believe
Northern Illinois in 2012 went 12-2 and went to the Orange Bowl, finished in the top 25 of the final rankings
Nebraska in 2013 finished 9-4 and in the top 25 in the final rankings (this team was destroyed by injuries at the time Iowa played them)

To answer the OPs question: I do believe Davis would still have a job with Iowa sitting at 1-8/2-7. I don't believe Barta would step up and take action. The football program is Kirk's empire until he gives it up or 25,000 people stop showing up every home game.

^ Din ding ding - winner!

Paw Rhodes with his incredibly bad record (not against Iowa), is still coach at ISU, so yeah, Davis would still have his job because KF would/is still the coach at Iowa. I'd call it an allegiance most state of Iowa fans seem to have toward coaches with mediocre records. And their ability to scape goat other coaches.

Saying Davis would still have a job because Rhodes still has a job is the most ignorant thing I have read on this board in a while. Rhodes coaches a perennial dormat. Rhodes makes the bare minimum for a college coach. Ferentz, on the other hand, took over a storied program. Ferentz is one of the 5 highest paid coaches in college football. Ferentz has facilities worth tens of millions more than Iowa State's facilities. The expectations are not the same at Lames as they are at Iowa. The coaches are held to a higher standard.

Personally, I believe Davis would quietly announce he was retiring at the end of the season if we were sitting at 2-5, as we would be with Iowa State's schedule. It's a shame this staff gets bailed out (and i'm sure they all get some bonuses) based on wins over cupcakes.

So tell me, dude, why don't you rag on Parker? His defense had been atrocious this season. Why don't you rag on KF?

You don't have the decision to fire Davis or Parker. Only KF. As long as you put up with KF... Football fans in the state of Iowa seem to have allegiances toward mediocre (at best) HCs.

I'm not dude, but Id say Phil P. avoids critical comments is because HISTORICALY his units play pretty well. The O on the other hand is historically and habitually lacking.

I agree for the most part. But let me quibble.

Iowa football "a storied program" is an exaggeration.

Iowa coaches of any sport are not held to a higher standard. There has been a thread that gives evidence that Iowa has one of the top grossing AD departments in the country and about the worst or the worst return for conference championships in any sport.

Last year Iowa ranked #7 in the nation in Total D. That buys you some credit.

Defense is bad this season. What is Parker doing to correct? You think this is good coaching?

Do some of you guys actually think, with the bad defense Iowa has this season, if Davis were fired the team would function better?

Fans' attitudes have to change. Fans let this happen. I can't imagine Iowa fans are satisfied.

Last year was last year and this year is completely different.

Matter of fact, some of you jokers were complaining about Davis' offensive production in 2012- his first year as Iowa OC. My goodness there seems to be a trend.

Yeah, but at least Parker has shown that he can get it done. When has Greg Davis shown that at Iowa?

Total D this year is 32nd in the country, Total Offense is 86th. Which one is more of a problem? Who is not getting it done?

Who is the real joker in this thread?

I can't even believe B1G offenses could be that potent but I believe they'll bump Iowa's defense to worse rankings. Wait until Iowa's defense goes up against more B1G offenses.

Instead of asking how potent Davis' offenses have been why don't you ask the salient question: how potent KF's offenses have been?

The key is all fans just want a head coach that appears to make moves to improve the program. This includes players, coaches and gameplans. I can't remember the last time that I truly thought Kirk made a single decision that you could say was a positive in any of these aspects.

The facilities upgrades are all positive improvements made by fans and donors.

It's sad to say and believe but I don't think he can right the ship even with cup cake schedules.

Defense isn't stellar this year. But we have much bigger problems on offense. The fact is the defense has been the strength of the team since KF got here except 2002. If we could have a top 30 offense, that would really help the defense.
