Woody

I thought woody played the best I've seen him play all year in this game. He seemed to play a stronger than normal. His defensive presence was definitely noticeable. He played Bergen tough. I know he usually makes some dumb fouls, but I was a little surprised we didn't get him more minutes in the second half.

He can't score on a team that has a sub-40% shooting percentage. Fran needs to squeeze out as much scoring as possible from his bigger guys, and McCabe, Basabe, and Olaseni are better scorers than Woodbury. But I did like Woody's defense last night.

Really? You think Gabe is in there for his scoring? I think Woody's rebounding and defense trump Gabes scoring.

It definitely does, Woody has a much higher basketball IQ, Gabe gets himself out of position and fails to box out a lot on defense.

Berggren got nothing offensively or on the boards with Woodbury in the game.

This is what ticked me off more than anything. Berggren killed us on the glass when Woody was on the bench, but Woody more than held his own against him. Last night was the best he has looked in Big Ten play. He needs to start playing like a 7 footer when he gets the ball....that's what's most frustrating with his game. His defense (other than the stupid fouls), rebounding and hustle has been very impressive.

I personally think that Woody's offense is suffering because he does not have a stronger defender to work against in practice. I'm guess he can get away with weak handling of the ball against Gabe.

Unless it is a bad matchup, I would like to see Woodbury/Gabe split time at Center and Basabe/McCabe split time at PF. Gabe has been playing well and when Iowa has one of their C on the floor thay aren't getting hammered on the boards.

For those that talk about blocking out, Basabe and Woodbury are the only ones that do consistently on this team.

Good game for Woody. Surprised FM didn't give us more Wood.

LULZ. Will have to remember that.

I, too, thought Woody played well last night. Was impressed he was able late in the game to rip that rebound from Berggren and some other Wisky player. I thought it was a fast whistle for the held ball but I also understand why the officials wanted to avoid a wrestling match, especially at that point in the game, that could quickly get out of control.

Agree with others that Woodbury played a solid game. Bergren is not slouch down low and Woodbury held his own. Also perplexed why Woodbury sits for extended periods in the second half of games. WI's only offense for multiple possessions were rebounds, put backs and us fouling them. Olaseni got pinned under the hoop a few times. Woodbury seems more comfortable catching on the move in space vs. posting up, so feed him in those spots more often.

Woodbury just needs to go up strong with the ball and at least get fouled. It'll come in the off-season after some workouts.

Agreed. I remember a particular play where he caught a lob pass under the basket and did 2 or 3 pump fakes before going up and getting blocked. Any other 7 footer would've hammered it down and left the basket shaking for another 30 seconds. That's what aggrivates me the most about him. He just needs to be more assertive. McCabe has less fear against other bigs than he does (and gets blocked less too). I like his aggression on the defensive side, I'd just like to see more of it on the offensive side.

Woody played well defensively and did a great job aggressively attacking the boards last night. Like most freshman bigs, he needs to work on using his size on offense and stop bringing the ball below his head where guards can strip it/bother him. Stuff he could get away with at the high school level just won't work at this level. He will learn and adjust his game in time and has all the tools to be a really special player. Right now he is too tentative and rushes it a bit when he gets the ball. A lot of that is because he is worried about getting stripped/blocked. He just needs to slow things down a bit and take what the defender gives him and stop forcing it. If he has an open look for an easy dunk/layup, he needs to put it in right away. If he doesn't have a quick score possibility he needs to take his time and read the defense and react. That means either taking his guy one on one using a post move or passing the ball to an open man. Again, most freshman bigs need time to adjust and learn, Woody is no exception.

Hopefully. He really needs to work on his bounce. He's getting stripped b/c he's not as strong as he needs to be. He's getting blocked a lot b/c he's not getting off the ground. He was able to get away with that in high school, but he's not in college.
