I have seen posts from people on message boards who have seen him play and are not impressed. First of all players now days are not recruited by how they do in high school, but how they do in AAU. Often they are double and tripled teamed in high school. I value Roy Williams opinion a lot more than someone who seen him at a high school game. If he is good enough to play for Roy he can play for IOwa.

what he says is true, a kid has a bad HS game where he is dbl or triple team and suddenly he is a bad player
then when they get into college if they are not 1st team AA after that freshmen season they will never get better

I've only seen one or two posts that would indicate people aren't that impressed. I wouldn't sweat it. How does a guy win the MVP of whatever league/tournament he was in this summer with all of those blue-chip recruits if he isn't that great?

Woody is good. Not a great fit for what Fran says he wants to do but who has been that Fran has recruited? Fran says he wants to get out and run and then he recruits white guys from Iowa. They are great basketball players and I'm stoked to get them, but they don't mesh. Hopefully he changes his philosophy with them

Relax, there are boatloads of load mouths and potstirrers on message boards.
Woody has enough skills that he could walk on to the court for the next Iowa game, start and help this team. Will he be a Patrick Ewing or more recent a Sullinger? no probably not but he may develop into a real good player. Gesell could help this team immediately as well.

He doesn't have the nose or the backside to be either of those guys

How many 7'1" high school players have you seen before they even got to college? These guys aren't recruited because they are the best in high school, but because they have the greatest potential to grow into great college players. Big, big, young athletes always take longer to develop because they have out grown their coordination. As they catch up their size is still there, and this is when they become "great". Even I could have been at least, really good, had I been 7'1". My son has coached against Woodbury and he thinks he'll help the Hawks.

I agree with your statement on double teams. my cousin faces box and 1. face guard or double team nearly every night. hes averaging about 17 a game and parents get ****** that he shoots so much, but when you're the only player on the team that can score you have to shoot a lot. this can lead to a player looking bad at times. In AAU you're surrounded by good players so you look more like the player you actually are. if your high school team has only 2 people that can hit the rim. its simple, shut down the best player. make the next best try to beat you. I'd say 90% of the time the strategy works.

All i would like to see from him is to block some shots, alter some more shots, rebound and get a few garbage baskets and I'll be happy with him. Until his junior year and then I will hope for more

I actually like the fact that he plays like he is supposed to play. It is not his fault that he doesn't have anybody else on his team. I would rather have him pass out of a double team than force shots. I mean it is high school.

Papathawki is spot on. Illinois fans said the same about Meyers Leonard and he was a bit awkward last year, but is a force this season. You see the same for Zeller with Indiana....does some nice things, but is still learning the game. The key is to put better talent around Woodbury so he doesn't have to carry the team.
