Woodbury's Confidence Grows

You should take another look at Iowa's early season schedule; if you really think its going to hurt our chances, it will be because we will lose some games early on. The schedule, overall, is in no way an easy one.

I am excited to see how Woody, Gabe, Uthoff, and White look on the court. I think these are 4 guys we need to see an awful lot of this Fall. Some nice options to work with ... I truly hope and expect to see improved play from Woody ... He has shown flashes of having a nice touch in the middle ... Consistency will be key ...

I think Woody's production on offense relies on Fran's willingness to run set post plays for him. We haven't seen much of that as Fran likes to push the ball and set a lot of screens for the perimeter players in the half court. I've been saying it for over a year now but giving Woody some post iso opportunities every once in awhile could do wonders for the team's half court scoring slumps. Woody has some nice post moves when he isn't getting pressured by multiple defenders. Give the guy some space and let him go to work. I'm not saying it has to be used a lot but would give the defense a different look besides the normal motion looks Fran uses.

They did run the offense through him a lot, after they didn't get the fast break, during the Tennessee game in the tournament. Seemed to work pretty well.

Woody improved greatly from his freshman to sophomore year. Big men typically take longer to develop. I think we'll be very happy with him the next two years.

Meh. Not so sure about that. I definitely wouldn't say greatly.

Yeah, well he had two dunks last year which doubled his output from the previous year. So there's that.

Seriously, though he did get to the line more often the second year and increased his FT% by 20%.

My biggest gripe with Woody is his tendency to lose his composure right when he's going up for what should be a gimmie shot. Every once in awhile he shows great touch for a big man, and then other times he launches the ball off of the backboard like a tall 6th grader who hasn't grown into his body.

I'd be satisfied if he could just become more consistent offensively. If he could consistently hit the easy shots that he gets then he could pretty easily reach a double double each time out. I love his grit. I love his energy. That's what you want to see in a big man. He just needs to corral it a bit in order to make more of an impact.

We need a couple of low post options that can score the basketball and get other bigs in foul trouble. I'm hoping White is developing a post game also, but Woodbury and Olesani need to be a threat with their backs to the basket...if they are and they can shoot a high percentage down low...it's puts a lot more pressure on the defense. We haven't had a consistent post game in Fran's tenure. Time to start.

To piggyback off this it would be nice if he developed some low post moves. The Kevin Mchale up and under move would be perfect, but that would be considered old school and I do not even know if they even teach that to big men anymore. A back-to-the basket spin move or the ability to shoot over the top of smaller defenders would help out a lot.

And Tennessee's NBA prospect, Stokes, also disappeared while defending Woody.

Woody still has to prove he can be a force down low.

He showed some decent post play in his last game played. Now he has had months to improve....If Fran says he will score more then he will score more.

I've never heard that saying before, but I am gonna use it from now on. That is exactly how he looked. I should know I was that kid in 6th grade.

Lots of people wrote woody off a long time ago. Not this guy. If we saw the guy we saw against Tennessee look for a very good year, which this team will need if they are going to be as good as last year (before the meltdown).

Woody is the kind of player who only has to improve a little to improve his stats allot. I had a chance to talk to Fran and I asked him who the most improved player was from last year and he said Woody without hesitation.

I think he will be one of the major reasons we are better this year than last and his senior year he will be a beast.

I agree that Woody is the kind of player who only has to improve a little to improve his stats a lot. He probably has matured a lot into his body since last year. It will be interesting to see how many minutes he and Gabe will get at center. Gabe has put on some muscle since last year too. Iowa will have a lot of players that will be physically more mature this year. Uhl should be fun to watch, but a year in a major college basketball weight program should do wonders for him.

Frank Kaminsky at Wisconsin was a scrub his first two seasons, putting up worse numbers than Woody did his first two at Iowa. Big men take time, although Kaminsky and Woody are very different players, the Tennessee game showed Woody has the post moves, he just needs to find his spots and be confident going up with the ball. Not too many players an contend with 7'1" and >250 lbs, whatever he's at this year. Saw some photos of him this summer where he was looking like a freakin' red wood.

Woodbury will be a lot better this year, and he wasn't that bad last year.
