With all of the depth building up

And how hard minutes will be to come by do any of you guys worry about anyone transferring for more PT? Amazing that fran has been able to keep all of these guys here when Lick couldn't keep less talented players from leaving that played 30 mpg.

For the first time in a long time this is big boy basketball. How about next year when you add Jok and Uthoff and only lose May? Great seasons ahead Hawk fans.

Yes and no. In Licks system you could play 35 mins without breaking a sweat. In Fran's system you shouldn't play 35 seconds without breaking a sweat. Maybe I am being a bit crazy but like Fran said last night for most of the guys he has to watch the minutes so they are able to play his style to the fullest. Like White 30 mins at full effort is his max to be fully effective.

On average any given team can have 11 players eligible to play on any given night, minus those redshirting or injured. If everyone averaged the exact same amount of time per game, that would be 18 minutes/game @ 11 players/game. That is a significant amount of minutes. Players will understand that some games they will play more, and some games they will play less. If they do not earn those minutes, then they will not deserve to play. Thus if they transfer we will not miss those players...

Depth is good. And Fran is great at building depth.

I was thinking the same thing. But one thing that is good about this team is there are some bench guys.

The problem is that things were so bad, some were actually starters at one point.

McCabe, Basabe, Ingram, May, Ogelsby, and Oleseni, and Meyer are classic bench players. Each offers something particular, while each has certain limitations.

Next year will it will be tricky adding in Uthoff. And if Jok continues to get stronger, Fran won't be able to keep him off the court.

So, it might come down to Clemons and MG fighting each other for the starting PG position and the other guy playing the Vinny (Microwave) Johnson role.

Why not use this argument for EVERY team with good players, especially the Duke's, Kentucky's, and Kansas' who have 12-13 5-star players up-and-down the bench.

Certainly a pleasant dilemma.

For the personal glory hounds, the door is always available.

For the team players, unified glory awaits.

I don't think we're THAT deep. We have 9 guys averaging over 10 minutes per game. I think a month from now we'll only have 8 guys regularly averaging over 10 per game.

I meant more next year with Jok and Uthoff coming in and I don't think Fran will be able to keep them out of the rotation.

I am not worried about guys transferring out at all. This team has a chemistry to them. They all enjoy each other. You can see it on the faces of the players on down the line. In the game or on the bench they are having fun and supporting one another. There isn't a greedy player on this team.

3 years ago we were worried about our best players leaving. Now we are worried about losing pretty good players who can't get play time. That's a big difference and really shows how far we have come.

If i was you , I wouldnt ever worry about players transferring, let him go,thats the reason why we recruits good players in first place...... Examples given, Anthony Hubbard..... yikes

I only see a couple of players who may eventually leave for lack of opportunity.

McCabe and Basabe are seniors next year. Neither is going anywhere in the offseason and both will finish out their careers here whether starting or not. I also think they'll continue to get minutes next season. They each have an ability to provide a spark when needed and both have at different times this year.

Oge's is here to be a shooter. He's always known it and has always accepted it. If he's hitting, he'll play. If not, he won't. He doesn't have issues being a role player and I believe he's here to stay.

Olesani has always been a project, knows he's a project and seems grateful to have the opportunity he's been given. He stays.

Uthoff left one school to transfer in. I think he's here to stay regardless, but I also think it's a moot point for him because from all accounts he's capable of being a contributor and will get some minutes.

In my mind, Meyer and Ingram are the only players to whom the OP's question may apply. For all I know this year's freshman class may be our starting lineup in three seasons, so I don't say that because I know anything about what kind of players they can be. But at this time they are the two freshmen not seemingly guaranteed future minutes.

However, not every capable player gets to see minutes early in their career and most don't transfer because of it. Players see the court early when you're lineup in thin or when you land a great player. If you look at the established, successful college programs they commonly have young quality players who ride a lot of pine and bide their time until an older guy leaves or they gain some necessary experience.

May we eventually lose someone because they decide they'd prefer to go somewhere else and play more or play earlier? It's certain to happen at some point. But if we continue to improve as a program future underclassmen are only going to find it harder and harder to earn top minutes. And that, my friends, is a very good thing.

I have to agree with VAHawkFan. The only 2 I think may transfer would be Meyer and Ingram. And of those 2 I think Ingram is the most likely. The reason I give him as the more likely is that I feel Gesell's move to the 2 makes his minutes even harder to come by. Marble will play the 2 and 3 next year. Because Uthoff will play the 3 (as a back up and they will want Marble and Uthoff on the floor at the same time). This will affect Ingram's minutes. Not to mention Jok who is a 2 and 3. Jok is a better shooter and has more height than Ingram.

My Idea of the Roster next year:

PG - Clemmons: Backed Up by - Gesell and Marble
SG - Gesell: Backed Up by - Ogelsby, Marble, Jok, Ingram
SF - Marble: Backed Up by - Uthoff, Jok, Ogelsby, White
PF - White: Backed Up by - Basabe, McCabe, Uthoff, Meyer
C - Woodbury: Backed Up by - Meyer, McCabe, Basabe, Olaseni

When McCabe and Basabe graduate Meyer's time will go up. But Ingram is looking at a big battle for playing time as he is the same age or older than is main competition.

O don't see Meyer breaking the top 8 players next year. Ogelsby top 8 against zone defenses now and next year. McCabe falls lower as the talented younger players get more experience. Ingram may be a better 2 guard than Gessel based on a few glimpses - time will tell (maybe he should have red shirted)

Depending on just how good Utoff is, Gessel made ride pine and Marble move to 2 guard.
Imagine the size with
Clemmons - Gessell
Marble -Jok, Ogelsby
Utoff - Marble, Jok
White - Basbe
Woodbury - Basbe or Meyer

All I can say is this not the kind of discussion Hawk BB fans really deserve after the "horrible years" and some "horrible coaches".

Just remember that injuries, academics and off court problems can always come into play. Just consider the possibility that in 2 years because of some of the above Ingram and Meyer start for the Hawks. AND the Hawks finish in the top 3 or 4 in the Big Ten and actually win a game or 2 in the NCAA.

You never know, but it's great Fran the MAN has recruited so well and set up Iowa BB for years to come.

I think we're all emotionally stable enough to handle it.
