Wisconsin Envy

Jon Miller has admitted to having this disease, and I have to admit that I'm starting to have symptoms. It's hard not to be impressed with what they've recently accomplished in football and basketball. It hurts to see former Iowa commit Melvin Gordon's historic performance while Iowa's best option at RB wouldn't be a RB if he played for the Badgers. Wisconsin replaced their entire front seven on defense and didn't miss a beat. Iowa is replacing three linebackers and the Badgers have the better defense. Both schools have strong traditions of o-line play, but does anyone think Iowa's line will dominate the Huskers like Wisconsin did yesterday. I don't. I guess the point of this post is to give the Badgers a tip of the cap, and to remember a time(80s) when the roles were reversed.

No doubt they have things humming up there. In my opinion, Barry Alverez may be the best AD in the business.

If Wisconsin wins out they are in their 4th BCS Bowl in 5 years. Their BB team is ranked 3rd in the country and number 1 in the B1G I believe. Wisky and Mich State are a reminder that people who say Iowa should be Cyclone-happy with winning seasons because we sucked a half century ago are what is harming the program. And yes, the 80s proved we can occupy their spot with the right determination. Those lifetime contracts are program-killers. (and Fran with that contract and scholarship for your son you need to win some NCAA games)

I keep imagining a .gif...ferentz is driving an old jalopy like the Beverly Hill Billies car and Wisconsin and MSU come up from behind and breeze by in nice modern looking convertibles and zoom on into the distance.

My envy for Wisconsin begins and ends with Barry Alvarez. They have a REAL athletic director that is personally invested in the success of his programs. Especially football.
We have Bingo Barta, the begging clown.

Who would have guessed that Alvarez would be as successful as an AD as he was as a coach? I figured they gave them the job out of respect for what he did bring their FB team to prominence. I wish that Gable would have taken over as AD.

Like it or not Wiscy has been pretty dominant in FB and BB for quite a while. In a way they are the new Michigan of the B1G. They run a good clean solid program-and develop players. They also are capable of playing to the strengths of their team, and seldom lose to teams they shouldnt. Yes I know they lost to NW this year, but they just beat Notre Dame so that loss doesnt look so bad now. If you were born in 1998 your history would be one of Wisconsin and OSU B1G dominance. That is the reality, and we had our chance to capitalize on our success but could not sustain do to lack or recruiting, player developement, and general systematic issues. In other words we could have been where Wisco is, but let a fat cat get too fat now it can't learn new tricks. Evem with coaching changes and different philosophies they have found a way, that is tough to do. I have to agree that Alverez has some magic to him.We need to trade GB for him and turn around Iowa athletics in general. He would bring excellence to the University that it is lacking right now, I mean did anyone else read that article "Iowa None Worse" how frggin embarrasing is that.

Barry Alvarez may be the last of a dying breed.. The former head football coach turned AD happened quite a bit when I was growing up once Alvarez steps down that might be it at the D-1 level at least for the power 5 schools. Now AD(s) are CEO(s) with an MBA that are great at PR and fundraising. Given the current climate and the money involved that is probably what you need.

Iowa has AIRBHG, and Wisconsin seems to have some higher entity that actually helps their RB's. It must feast on cheese and beer instead of the bodies and souls of running backs.
