Winners & Losers from Overseas Trip

Ellingson...limited athletic ability and upside...good to have on the team. Seems to understand the game plan.

Uhl...regressing, little confidence, disappointing...trending down...enigma.

Wagner...space eater, tough, seems content, little offensive ability...good to have on team.

If Iowa is good...these three will disappear...for the most part, other than bit parts.

But...one never knows...breakouts can happen.

I agree with this rev - I think their limitations and the luxury of having better options will shrink these guys minutes but they are still nice options for breathers, foul trouble, etc. For whatever reason, I've always liked Dom's ball handling. I wish he could just be a D guy and a guy who handles the rock when we need it. Only shoot if its a layup.

Wow...tough crowd. Wagner seems content huh. I have to call you out on that one. Great athletes make it look sometimes like they aren't trying that hard...and he wears a poker face alot of the game. From his freshman year till now, he's improved greatly on the offensive end. He now has a slashing game and can finish...and Fran said he's even improved that aspect of the game. He still has to show he can hit that 12-15 foot mid range shot.

The one thing he does do is play defense and play physical...we need players like that in certain games...think MSU.

Do I think he'll start...no...does he have a role and upside...yes.

If Wagner never takes a 12-15 foot shot it will be too soon.

I think Kreiner, Wagner, Uhl, and Ellingson are all going to have their moments this season when we are all very glad they are part of the TEAM. Just like last year when they were the difference makers in certain games they will be once again this year and probably more often. I am cheering for Dailey to do the same because he seems like a great kid that is working hard. He is a HAWKEYE and I hope he finishes his career as one.

Ellingson showed this trip that, despite being able to do other things, a big part of his value is as a shooter. Yeah, duh, but when he struggled to shoot this trip, this was highlighted. Not worried about BE's and JB's shooting woes in Europe. They were shooters tired from sightseeing. I dare opposing defenses to leave them alone this year to help guard the paint. They'll regret it.

Uhl and Wagner will be veteran presences with limited but important usage. But we'll be glad they're there. Think the sightseeing fatigue probably affected Wagner's production as well because so much of his value is tied up in athletic energy.

I think Garza and Moss are big time winners here they've been hot all summer long. As far as losers I'm not going to go so far as to single anyone out there. I think that side of things just remains to be seen. I'm not worried about JBos shooting percentage over there or how some guys didn't play as well. I just think the depth chart will sort itself out shortly after the season gets going.

I'll reiterate what I said in my OP. I don't think anyone played poorly to where it was a concern. Certainly as someone brought up our team and all of our players were winners from this great experience.

My idea here was more what it appeared Fran was doing with rotations and where some position battle may have shown some separation. Still a long way until the season though.

It seemed like Fran was focusing on defense when overseas. They don't seem to have to worry about their offense. Cook, Bohannon, Moss, and Garza seem to be leaders which is important for a really good team. Hopefully, they will put it all together this year.

Winner Garza
Loser: Dailey

Other than these, I'm not sure what else you can take away. Moss played lights out but he's gonna get all the playing time he can handle. JBo didn't play great but doesn't and shouldn't change anything. Guys like Uhl, Nunge, Ellingson, Wagner didn't seem to standout.

I think Dailey was going to struggle to get playing time anyways so it was just more of a lost opportunity.

When I say Wagner is content...I mean that he is content to be on the team, do his best, great effort...and isn't a pouter or complainer...thus, a good teammate.

I like Moss...he will take a shot, and thinks he can make it...JB the same.

Uthoff and MG...were often afraid to "take the shot"...

I think this was a pretty solid analysis. Moss was already a starter and solidified it. Bohannon is in no risk of losing his job. Cook and Baer seemed to play well enough; they are both starters as well. Garza played the best and had the most to gain, i.e., the fifth position in the starting lineup.

Ellingson seems to be about the same -- good for 12-15 mins a game as a backup SG. Williams seems to have stepped up his game a bit. He's Bohannon's backup. Can he play well enough to steal backup mins at the 2?

Dailey's best chance is beating out Ellingson at the 2 or Wagner at the 3 for backup mins. The injury doesn't help, but I like his potential at the 3. He spreads the floor unlike Wagner.

Wagner didn't score much at all. He seems like a great teammate and good kid, but not a scorer. If he plays super hard when he is in head and defends and rebounds, he will still get some minutes.

Not sure where Uhl fits at this point. Feel like we have better options at every position.

I'm confident Pemsl will return and play very well.

Nunge is a question mark. He seems solid around the basket, but Garza is stronger. Nunge could eventually have an awesome inside/outside game, but appears to be really struggling to shoot the ball. I don't think a redshirt is out of the question.

Winners: Garza, Moss, Cook

Losers: Dailey, Uhl, Pemsl, Wagner

Pemsl's injury opened the door for Garza and Garza kicked the door down.

His dad was white frickin magic so he's gotta be good. It is hard not to stereotype him but there is a very good chance he is nothing like the stereotypical Iowa white boy.[/QUOTE]

You mean pretty fly for a white guy, didn't ya?

Not related to our players but update on the competition we played for some probably meaningless comparison. The Italy team we beat in game three, 106-64, lost yesterday to Emory University (D3, round of 32 team) 85-70, and the team we beat in the fourth game 88-49, lost to Fairfield today, 82-59.

Your comments and analysis is correct IMHO, but the chances of playing at the next level in either sport are very slim at best unless you are exceptional at one of them. He should just go with his heart and play what he enjoys most. Hoping like crazy it's basketball.
And if he is better at baseball than basketball, that could be fun to watch. Especially with Hellerball rolling.
