Win the toss

Defer or take the ball? Ferentz likes to take the ball although he has deferred a few times
If we win the toss play defense

Often I would choose to defer: 1) due to Iowa's stingy defense; and 2) to give the D-line one less possession in the 2nd half so they don't get worn down. But in this game, I want the ball. I think BF and the offense will be able to get at least a couple 1st downs on their first drive -- if they can't it's gonna be a long day -- and flip field position, which is OK for a 1st drive as they get their feet wet. What I DON'T want is 1) Michigan going up 7-0 so the Hawks have to play from behind; and 2) having Michigan punt to Ragaini and watch him let the ball roll inside the Iowa 10 yd line and the Hawks run their first plays in a deep hole.

Always defer.

If you’re on your heels you get some relief afte halftime and can stop the bleeding, and if you’re rolling you get to keep rolling.

The high likelihood of taking the first kick and going three and out isn’t worth giving up the guarantee of getting the ball first in the most important half.

Always always always defer.

I generally say defer especially when your defense is your strongest unit. But you have to wait until game time and the weather and wind to really make this decision.

If it is a windy day with wind from north to south or the other way around if you win the toss and take the ball the other team can take the wind at their back and make it difficult on your offense. I would rather we defer in these cases and let the other team probably receive and then we take a strong wind at our backs.

If weather is not a factor and they coaches feel their offense can do the job then take the ball.

I would destroy you in Madden '94. Gimme the ball, I'll run the clock all the way down in the first half and score a TD when the game clock hits 00:00. Then onside it to start the second half. If I get it, great, game over. If I don't get it, you don't have enough field to chew up the clock to get to OT to try to win it on the OT coin toss. Say you score, I get it back, walk down the field, kick the FG. Ball game. 10-7. Perfect Ferentz ball that I perfected 25 years ago. I've seen a lot of thrown controllers.

Personally I always prefer Iowa to defer. It always feels extra good going into halftime with a lead knowing you also get the ball first in the second half. Iowa also doesn't have the best history of scoring right away when they get the ball first.
In fact, Iowa seems to have a lot of 3 and outs first drive

Ball or defer depends on:
wind and weather conditions.

Michigan is going to be jacked. Emotion is okay for defense. Not so much offense.

Taking the ball will play into their emotional defense.

Don’t get in a hole in the field position game like ISU.

If weather/wind are decent I think you defer and try to get a 3-and-out and get decent field position. Go with your strongest unit and I think that’s defense

Michigan’s psyche is fragile right now.

Take the ball and set the physical tone early. If they get down early, they’ll fold like a wet blanket. Their wine and cheese crowd will be out of it as well.

Can’t wait!

I agree with SpiderRico, take the ball. If you take the ball and you don't score, then you get to play defense with the same pressure as it would have been if you deferred. However, if we take the ball and score, especially a touchdown, the pressure is squarely on the opponent before they ever got the ball. Because Michigan has shown to be fragile, pressure on them will be a very big deal.

Tecmo Bowl or gtfo.

Tecmo Bowl or gtfo.

Super Tecmo Bowl is so much better than Tecmo Bowl. The Greg Davis 4 play playbook just totally sucks, dude. I mean, Tecmo Bowl was a quantum leap when it came out, but by the time Madden got a few releases under its belt, it was a quantum leap over Tecmo Bowl. I know this might be heresy, but Joe Montana's Football was also a superior game to Tecmo Bowl. It had the same style of side to side game play, but way more plays.
